General Maintenance
#1

I'm wondering what people get for general maintenance items. What do you use on your cabriolet tops, what wax, what oil, oil weight, anti-freeze - that type of thing. Not only am I planning on spring maintenance coming up here soon - but am thinking that if we can come up with a best list (which may already exist buy have not found it) this could get indexed to the "Post's that any 968 owner should read!"

Thanks!

I would second the vote for Mobil 1 synthetic oils......but, I'm not a disinterested third party since I work for ExxonMobil! All kidding aside, the recommendation has got to be to use synthetic oil since it does not contain parafins (wax) which can lead to crankcase deposits. Though Mobil 1 has the biggest market share, there are other synthetics out there that are probably okay.

The best products I have ever found for freeing up corroded (rusted) nuts and bolts is Kroil or Aerokroil. These products are not available in retail stores but can be sourced through jobbers or directly from the mfg - KANO LABS. You can order over the internet or by phone from Kano (800-311-3374). Of the two products I mentioned above, the Aerokroil is actually the better of the two to use as a penetrating oil; however, since the Aerokroil contains silicone, you have to be very careful that you do not get any on painted surfaces.........it'll penetrate the pores of the paint and you'll never get it off! Both procducts are superior to WD-40 which is what most folks use. Incidentally, Kano has a whole line of proudcts from degreasers to engine flushes; but, since I have not tried them, I can't speak to their performance.

That would probably be next to impossible to nail it down to one product per category. Everyone has their preference for the subtle differences between brands.

I like to think the best oil is one that is changed regularly, the best wax is one that is applied regularly ... etc. In other words, it is not what you use, but how you use it.

I think most will agree that synthetic oil in a 15w-50 grade

Brand name waxes

Phosphate free coolant

Fresh country air for the tires <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Kirkland Wax-it - 55 gal. drum, available at Costco ?

Novus 2 for the instrument / VDO covers

Rejex for wheels

303 Aerospace Protectant for any exterior plastic, fibreglass or rubber

Leather CPR, or Chelsea Leather Food, or MOC Leather conditioner, for...uhh.. leather, I think.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Rejex or Mguier NXT wax

and, of course... Mobil 1 15-50

I'll second the vote for Kroil...just used it yesterday. Definitely saves a lot of frustration when you need to remove any corroded/ rusted parts.

How about recommendations for glass cleaners that do a good job removing "vinyl fog," the residue that sticks to the inside of the glass from the plasticizers outgassing from the interior plastics?

Cool - this is very helpful (for me) and I think we are developing consenus on some general (since yeah - everyone will have their own preferences) recommendations...

Oil: Synthetic 15-50

Antifreeze: Prestone Orange (phosphate free)

Tires: Air

Wax: Flash's secret special wax.

Plastic Window: Novus 2

And since apparently some people allow parts of their 968 to rust and corrode... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Kroil for those hard to loosen nuts and bolts...
