Gearset for 350 Km/h
#21

Could always machine the thicker shafts to the desired diameter by throwing it in a lathe.........no?

Nope, it's a hollow shaft because the rear drive shaft is inside the shaft ... also 3th and 4th gear are firm on the shaft with Quattro's ... useless for our needs ...

with the gearing you are setting up, you will need to be making 180 ft/lb at the wheels at about 2200rpm to be able to accelerate as fast.

[/quote]

@ low boost my engine does well over 250 ft/lb ( on 0,3 bar ) which is well over 210 ft/lb @ the wheels. On high boost I expect that figure to be higher.

By the way : I don't mind a downshift ... or even 3 for that matter

P.S. I'll be @ 2500 rpm in 6th when doing 80 Mph ; 0,35 bar boost and 370 Nm at that point in the current low boost setup.

good luck, but i think you are going to end up thinking the gearing is too tall. given that the aerodynamic limit of the 968 is a bit over 180, it seems like a waste to gear it for something unattainable that also is less than optimal for street driving. i think it is going to feel like a V8 box with long spaces between the gears, and a really tall final gear that always requires shifting to pass

one of the things i like most about the SC is that i no longer need to downshift to pass. i just step on the gas. i don't want to give that up.

again though, it's great that you did the research on this, and i wish you the best of luck

My wife would kill me if I put a tranny on the kitchen counter like that.

It is only his workplace in the garage. You haven't seen his kitchen yet :-)

Put your wife on the kitchen counter first then and do the tranny after that ....

If you do the first part right, she won't mind the second, I suppose ...

Wife on the kitchen table eh. Well since she is already supposed to be in the kitchen it's not that much of a stretch!

Gearbox is in place. I expect some small pieces from the dealer today and then it's ready for the first test drive.

Gearbox swap : check !

First testdrive just yet ; shifts like a angel, runs great with this gearset ( so far ) ; Feels like nothing has changed ; still shifting on the ears ; only thing is the speedo does behave somewhat strange

120 Km/h is indeed 2300 Rpm in 6th. No problems with pickup up from that Rpm.

To Germany this Sunday with a few Ferrari's, a Lotus, an Aston Martin DB9, some 993 and 996's, a Gallardo, a Morgan, some Mercedeses and some other nice wheels ; See whether I'm brave enough to get it over 300 km/h or maybe even 200 Mph .... chasing a few Ferrari's does make a man brave ( or stupid ? ), doesn't it ?

I'll keep you guys posted !

hmmm - maybe we just have different expectations of "pickup". right now, with my sc, at 3k in 6th, stomping on the gas puts you in the back of the seat ok, but isn't wild. at 2300 it's definitely soft. our power isn't that different.

but then, reviewers thought this car was fast when it was new, and i think it's a slug. so, maybe it's just subjective.

i know the gear spacing would make me crazy. i want the gears closer together, not farther apart. i think they are already too far apart. again though, that may just be subjective. i drove a close ratio gearbox for 25 years.

i hope it works out for you. post the part numbers when you get a chance.

Too much traffic on a sunny Sunday in the Eifel, so no top speed tests this time. Did have a run up the hill with the Gallardo chasing the 968 ; didn't get much closer though. Fun ride !

150 Km/h is 3000 rpm in 6th ; every 100 revs is 10 km increase in speed. Unbelievebly quiet and calm @ cruising speeds ( 160-170 Km/h ). I like it !

Nice but I do need the extra power in 5th and 6th. 23 October is the dyno run for high boost.

I'll keep you updated !

yeah - that's what i was afraid of. that tradeoff is always a tough one. finding the right balance is very tricky stuff.

i think i'm going to wait to see where i end up in power before i commit to this major project. for the purposes of normal freeway passing, i'm guessing that i need about 375nm at 3k rpm to be able to pull a .857 5th and .71 6th and not feel like i'm lagging. right now, i'm only doing about 300nm at that rpm. i think i can get it up to about 350 there, but i don't think that will be enough to make me happy. i'm afraid i will still have to downshift to pass, and that is exactly not what i want.

the never-ending project - good luck.

The .857 5th ( 0.25 ) and .71 6th ( 0.15 ) will bring you very close to ( but even further off then ) my gear steps, which are 0.24 from 4th to 5th and 0.13 from 5th to 6th. You'll need a lot more Nm to not feel like you're lagging .... I expect around 550 Nm @ that Rpm and hope that will do the job ....

So far I'm very, very happy up until and with 4th gear ; the kick in the back in 5th and 6th are not yet good enough ( for me ).

it's the power in 6th at 3000rpm that is the issue for me. on the freeway, at normal speeds you are in 6th at about 3000. i want to be able to step on the gas, not have to downshift, and pass. unlike any normally aspirated configuration, i have that ability now, though only marginally to my satisfaction. i should be ok though after i am done with the power plant.

moving 5th and 6th up, presents a need for even more power, and i'm not sure i can get that. it really has nothing to do with the spacing from 4th. that is an entirely different problem, and while a very real one, i'm not sure just how i want to deal with that. i think 4th is already too close to 5th, and 5th is definitely too close to 6th. they could stand a bit more spacing. i like the spacing of the lower 4 though.

whether or not going from .912 to .857 in 5th is too far or not, i'm not sure, and probably won't be until i try it.

.71 may indeed be too far for 6th, and i am also considering .73, which is what the turbo used.

as for hitting 550nm at 3k, best of luck. if you have factory rods, i think the rods are going to bend long before that happens. i just threw away a set that bent at a much lower level than that.
