fuel smell in cabin of cab
#1

When I first got my car wife and I both commented on the smell of unburned fuel in the car. We could smell it top up or down. Back then I searched 968.net (RIP) and came up with a few possibilities: crack or hole in tank or bad seal on top of the tank. I found no indication of either on my car and found the problem was fixed if I didn't fill above half a tank (unless I took a hard left).

Well, last fall I pull away after filling up to half and to my horror I left a small puddle of gas. The car was now leaking behind the rear passenger-side wheel. Enjoyed the rest of the gas in the car and began saving money for the worst case, a new tank.

Last week my mechanic did a smoke test on the tank and good news! the tank appears to be fine but what was found was a bit disturbing and too predictable-- a bad hose with cracked rubber.

My mechanic had to order the hose from germany as it is not in any inventory in the US? My car is low milage (40k ish) but weathered, so if you have a more weathered cab (not the same part in coupe) or gas smell you may want to inspect this part. Its pretty easy to get to by removing the sheet-metal elbow cover in the trunk.

get used to this folks - every original rubber part in the car is WAY past its lifetime, especially hoses and bushings

Good job!
First thing my wife said when I got my new (1993) 968 was "this smells like gas, same as your 944". I never smelled it but she always did. After looking in the trunk, I too have same issue! Will order part today.

Also in the interest of full disclosure, the comment about the gas was really the second thing my wife said the first was:

Her: So how much is this (car) going to cost
Me: you know I only paid 6K for the car
Her: I said "how much is this going to cost (i.e. improvements/upgrades/performance), not how much did it cost"

I immediately started the slush fund.

Welcome to the "time to pay for others laziness while owning an expensive vehicle"

Anyway, several tubes and fitting lie between tank and trunk sheet metal.

Does it smell when tank is full?
Does it smell when making a left turn with half full( or greater) tank?
Does it smell when sitting still?

Does it smell in the engine bay?
Does it smell under the car in the rear?

I had a bad tank fitting and rotted fill hose and bad ball valve. Replaced all and everything smells OK now. Also, I had a leaking exhaust under driver seat. this fixed too.

With limited upkeep before your ownership, you are looking at about minimum 2-3000$ to bring car up to par.

read you load and clear. I wil inspect, if not replace all rubber in the fuel delivery system. As well we are doing the timing belt and tensioners this weekend. I will be replacing any and all hoses/lines while in there. Following weekend is the tune up/ new plug wires

feel free to suggest/reccomend other areas to address. I value any and all input.

I paid $79.78 for the hose after my mechanics markup (and $25 for airfreight from germany), surely it's cheaper from Sunset. I was also charged 2 hours for the smoke test, replacing the hose, and applying new factory body sealer on the sheet metal elbow to get a good reseal.

Just so glad it wasn't the tank. With the money I saved I am getting a new top!

Unfortunately, if you can;t fix the leak/smell..it may be from one of the hoses on top of the tank (see pic)

In that case, you would have to drop the trans...

Also, I replaced the expansion tank . Got a used one from DCauto for 20$.

You can see the bellows hose I had to replace still attached to the tank in that picture (top right corner of the tank in the pic).

My fuel smell after having the car back a few days appears fixed (the gas leak is certainly fixed). I will give it a full tank (took it to mechanics running on fumes and they only put in 10 gallons) and a spirited drive this weekend.

Good for you...just saved yourself a major PITA.

Don't forget the top filler hose (the short one that goes form the filler spout to the ball valve breather mechanism) They often rot , too.

I get a slight fuel smell when the car is parked in the garage. No indication of a leak or any smell while driving. Looks like I will need to investigate these hoses as well.....
