Fuel Gauge Problem
#1

Looks like my gauge is stuck on full 4/4

2 Questions

1) Is this a common problem?

2) Is this an easy fix?

Thanks

Sounds like the opposite of a common problem....not being able to get the gauge to go all the way to full! You should check the connections back at the sender, under the rear carpet under a cap on the passenger side. I wonder if that gauge has a failure mode that pegs it to full? I assume it goes back to empty when the car is shut off? If not, it could be physically stuck. Try tapping on it?

If the connetion is good and a tap will move the gauge from full to actual, it may be a bad gauge. I had the problem of normal to full readings that I could "bang" in and out of correct readings. As these were used in 944's and 968's there should be no problem getting the entire gauge assembly from a bone yard.

mine would get stuck at 3/4. then, when i had 1/4 left, it would jump down and be accurate from then on.

after cleaning up my electrical system quite a bit, it now works much better. it does sway as much as 1/4 tank up and down some times. also, it goes to empty too quickly.

the price i got on a new one was btwen $100-200 and it just doesn't bug me that much.

plus, i'm not sure how to tell if it's the sender or the gauge.

Mine goes to full, but then goes fairly quickly down to 1/4, then slows down from there. I've never put more than 14 gallons in! That's 6 more gallons to go, but the needle was right above the orange zone.

Another 968 owner I know drives it till the gas light comes on, then fills up! I'm not that brave...

I've been watching the trip meter, when I get to about 325 I go and fill up.

What do you'all do?

Mine is not what I would call 100% accurate, but it seems pretty good. Never goes all the way full and does seem to bounce around a bit here and there which I am chaulking up to electrical problems in the IC as I also have the crazy temp guage problem. I'm hoping ground cleanup rectifies both.

I will drive until the light comes on (translation: "not afraid to") but not on purpose. I've never put more than 18 gal even when the light is on, so I guess I had about 1.5 gal left...

Supposedly we have a 2+ gal reserve when the light comes on.

my experience is that the gauge may not be too accurate/stable, but the red light is very accurate. i believe that the light has it's own contact inside the sender. so it should be accurate.

i've been taking the car to the 'red light' zone and then drive about 40 miles. i've never had a hard time getting to 400 miles on a tank, but from there, it's guesswork. i usually have 19-19.5 gallons to fill up at that point. i know (don't ask!) that the car holds exactly 20.5 gallons when empty, so 1 gallon to spare is a nice cushion.

if you keep track of your mileage and figure a 20.5 gallon tank, you should have a good idea of your range. i'm sure at this point with all our mods/wear and tear that we're all getting different mileage.

I have a minor bit of gauge flakiness too, and I did clean up most of the grounds within the past year. I still haven't done the one that's tough to get to at the back of the block. Does anyone know which ground point(s) would be most likely to affect the gauges and where are they located?

under the fuse box.

it's awkward under there.

unscrew the two corners of the fuse box. lift/twist it as much as possible out of the way. reach back under the fender side and you'll feel two ground screws. those are the key ones. one will probably be in bad shape and one will probably be just fine.

you can also reach these from the driver's footwell, but i don't know how you'd be able to access them to clean them well.

Good info...thanks. I'll poke around in there tomorrow while I'm tinkering.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions..I took her for a ride tonight and noticed the gauge was starting to move down. I hit the trip odomoter (while I was stopped) last tme I filled up and now have about 200 miles on the car, so looks like I have lots more fun before I need to refill. I will keep a close eye on it and maybe look for that red light before next fill up.

Thanks again, really appreciate it.
