From the Maserati world
#1

Surprisingly bulletproof cars, not much goes wrong with them but I found this tidbit interesting and also not all that different than Porsche ; a forum member who reached 250 K miles on his daily driver 2009 Maserati finally had the alternator fail and the OE  part from the dealer is $ 580.  For a NEW ( not rebuilt )  Ferrari-Maserati  alternator  !    Another member with a 2010 car managed to brake his sun visor ( btw, the driver's sun visor does not have any electrical components to it, or even a mirror.. )  and the cost for that part is $ 1,490 !!     :glare: .

How does that reconcile ??!!

The mafia cornered the Maserati passenger side sun visor market.

A number of years ago I had a 1959 Mercedes 220S Cabriolet. It had what Mercedes called the Hydrak Transmission.  Essentially a 4 speed manual with an electrically actuated clutch.  No clutch pedal.  When you touched the shift lever on the steering column it actuated a vacuum that sucked in the clutch and let it out when you let go of the lever.  It also had a fluid coupling, so it could freewheel at a stop like an automatic.   The company that made it also made a version for Porsche (Sportomatic) and for Volkswagen (Automatic Stick Shift).   Anyway, the vacuum box for it on my Mercedes was bad.  Mercedes wanted $4800 for a replacement (and this was about 20 years ago)!   I found the Volkswagen version for $260.  Worked fine.

I had a 74 Super Beetle with the Automatic Stick.  Pretty advanced for a simple car.  Was a fun car.

Fun is probably the wrong descriptor.  It did what it was designed to do and there were very few things that could go wrong compared to other cars.
