No I didn't.    I'm betting tires too but could it be the beings in the transaxle?  That wouldn't be fun.

 

It's still on my list but there's the car I posted above.  I was going to look at it today but they called and said it was still at an upholstery shop.   I'm glad they called, it's about an hour and a half away.     Another car also surfaced about 3 hours away.    It's a white 94 Cab.   Trying to get to that one this week.    I hate to say it but a dark horse has entered the race.

 

I think I mentioned that I use to own a white 944 S2 Cab.    That car just fit me.   Well, one popped just  few miles from here.   It's also white.    Even with 130k miles on it, it runs and drives great but it's got a lot of small problems.    Still, if they drop the price enough, I may buy.   Frankly, I think the S2 is better looking than the 968 but I've always wanted a 968.   Mechanically, it's the pinnacle of the line and just a cool car.

You think the 944s2 is better looking than the 968. Yea I love their side view mirrors. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. What’s that old saying? Be patient. Your car is out there waiting for you.

Yes, basically the front end.   I think the pop forward headlights make it a bit of a 928 junior.

Not quite understanding why you buy a car you don't like,

It's a bit like buy a Prius as it has all the green cred, but it's an ugly as hell car with no appeal to anyone with eyes,

I like the S2, and especially the cab...and, the parts are going to be far more available.

 

I like many of the updated features of the 968 (the headlights exposed, the vario cam, dual mass flywheel, etc.), and especially the rarity vs a 944.But, to each their own.

Still waiting to get a look at the coupe in the upholstery shop.    Sorry if I offended anybody for my comments about not loving the pop-up headlights.

 

Anyway, I was near the red cab for work so I stopped by for another look.   The rear bumper is definitely a different color so we looked very hard under the trunk mat but found no evidence of damage and there's nothing in the Carfax.   I'm guessing it had some minor damaged and was replaced.   The seller thinks the car is probably sold but who knows.

 

The seller made a comment however that I've got a question about.   He said you can look at the numbers on the timing belt and determine the age of the belt.    Is that true?

Only if its a gates or dayco belt and the numbers repeat every 10 years

Thanks again.

 

I'm getting photos of the belts.

 

How would I know that the noise I heard was from the tires and not from the pinion bearings?    I heard the noise decelerating from 60ish.  The noise was the same with the car in gear and not in gear.

The pinion bearing ( if / when starting to go bad ) sound is almost identical to an airplane's jet engine powering down when landing and taxiing on the runway, very smooth and consistent, particularly when slowing down and whether in gear or in neutral coasting to a stop, but it is most definitely not a rumble type noise. Rumble, or the sound of rocks tumbling in a barrel can be a wheel bearing or even a differential going bad. A bad CV joint will have a clicking / tapping sound . Tires can make a lot of weird noises, although they tend to " howl " but I suppose some kind of rumbling sound is not impossible.

As it turns out, they have no idea about the belts after telling me all about the date codes proving they were recent.    They don't have any photos of them either.   You really have to wonder about car dealers.  I guess they figure people will just take them at their word.   Anyway, still hoping to get to see that coupe.

I finally gave up on the red cab.    The seller thought it was similar to this car

That car was, in my very humble opinion, an excellent example in great shape with very good history.   It has some warts but overall, a very nice car in a great color.

He felt insulted.   It wasn't my intention to insult him but he really didn't take it well.   I think the red cab is a bit better but with no service history and a refusal to let me take it for a PPI, there's just no way I'd pay that much.

The noise of a bad pinion bearing is loud. You won't be able to hear anything else in the car.

 

If you have the pinion bearing issue, it may be difficult to find a good shop where you live. There is one in CA that does, it, requiring taking the transaxle out of the car, strapping it to a pallet and freighting it to CA. The other option I found was a transmission shop in Holly Hill, FL, right next to Daytona. He really impressed me when I talked to him. I took the car up on a trailer, and he drove it for about 30 seconds before he told me it was the pinion bearings. I had given him no prior description other than it made noise.

 

His shop was nearly as clean as an operating room and he assured me he would keep my car inside. He ordered all the right parts, brought me up to inspect everything before the rebuild and showed me the problem.

 

He also put a two year warranty on his work and gave a good discount for cash. I think it was "Precision Transmission". He has been in business for years and has done some 35,000 rebuilds I think he said including Ferrari's and other marques.

 

I went this route as it was 40 minutes from my house and as I said the local Porsche shops, including Brumos, wouldn't do the job and Brumos never bothered calling me back. In addition I still have a numbers matching car, if that means anything on the transaxle. Who knows.


The other route is to put a used one in. Then you still don't know if you have a good one and what warranty if any would you get. If you have to ship it, there is labor in and out, plus the labor on the rebuild. Cost, cost, cost.

 

If it's old noisy tires, you will know as soon as you put new ones on. Tires time out at about 5 years, so check the date codes. You will most likely have to replace them anyways. Mine are timed out. I put them on in 2013 when I bought the car and they don't have 6K on them yet. I will be looking for new ones.

 

Good luck, there is lots of info online about pinion bearing failures. Mine if I remember correctly was about $2700.00 or so. I could look it up if needed.
