Getting to know the car better now.
New left side rear hatch lock and gasket was the project today. Mission accomplished.
Curious about this latest issue though. This car has 119K, 6 speed, very good leakdown and compression. Cap, rotor, and plug wires are of unknown provenance, but definitely don't strike me as original. Coil might be, not sure. All belts, fluids, and engine seals were recently done. K&N filter and airbox mod. RS Barn Catback exhaust.
It runs seamlessly and strong from 4200 or so and up, and has good tip-off/low end performance too.
The problem is, it has a very distinct flat spot starting @3200rpm or so. It continues into the high threes or early fours (more data on that tomorrow), then kicks back in and runs to redline.
Hey, its not exactly throwing me against the belts, but I'm a picky sonofabitch and I want to know what's up. Its definitely there.
Cap and rotor (maybe wires) will be replaced tomorrow, with another report.
Otherwise, what gives? Fuel filter has been replaced recently. I have not cracked the box to see if there is some kind of aftermarket chip in there.

What about chip? I think the stock chip seems to have that flat spot from what I remember and from what I remember of stock dyno charts it is the norm. Even some of the chipped dynos if I rememebr correctly have that little dip/flat spot.
Every VarioCam/VTec engine dyno plot I've seen shows a dip before the cams switch it's just a question of how big/long of a dip from car to car.
I'm sure others will be along to correct me shortly. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

A little more info:
To be more accurate, it accelerates briskly up to 3200rpm, then flattens out. A brief surge is felt at 3600rpm, then it flattens out again. It picks back up at 4200 and runs well to redline.
It has been suggested that I need the RSBarn chip to complete my mods and the car could be suffering a lean drop-out in that rev range. Sure feels like that could be it to me, so I'll end up getting the chip and seeing what happens.
Cheers,
