Flash is already ahead of me!
#1

He had 5 posts a few minutes ago. Probably up to 700 by now.

Unbelievable. The man does not sleep and apparently has no occupation other than 968 poster.

This forum is very cool!

I give up.

Its 31 to 9 in his favor.

I am in awe. Wonder if he gets a bulk discount on keyboards.

It's kind of like my wife tells me "You'll be older then me for the rest of your life". Flash will always have more posts than us for the rest of his life and with the rate he posts probably long after he is gone.

As a would be moderator, I would like to ask some rhetorical questions: is post count really an indicator of one's worth to the board? Why does it bother you that someone has more posts? Is quality better than quantity? Something to chew on with your morning cofffee

As another potential moderator, I'd answer the rhetorical questions this way. Post count is NOT an indicator of someone's worth to the board. High - or low - post count doesn't matter. Quality is more important than quantity - in fact, I'd suggest that everyone review their about-to-be-posted post and consider whether or not it provides information, advances the discussion, or takes up space.

Actually I was just joking around

Y'all are getting serious on me sorta fast, the relative 'value' of a post, etc. This is a free form discussion medium and must be accepted as such. Now, that does not excuse defamatory, insulting, or ridiculously OT posts, just gives a fellow (or gal) a lot of leeway.

No argument with you at all, RPM - and your opening posts were, I believe, taken by all as intended - jests. However, Greimann's rhetorical questions shifted the tone a bit, and - as you point out - that's fine. One of my points is that, for example, posts that simply say "search" or "Yup" (or, in many more words, just as little) probably aren't worth posting. Sure, there's lots of leeway - but (and maybe this is a personal quirk) I'm also not on here looking for BS, wasted time, or nonsense. On substantive topics, I'd like to see the posts be relevant, helpful, or non-existent - but not redundant, unnecessary, or otherwise of that type. I don't think it's so difficult for us to be at least that considerate of each other. (Ooops, hadn't realized I'd fallen onto the soap box - OK, I'm off now.)

Like the car jingle said, "I asked for it, I got it..." Thanks.

To further expound on the shift in topic, I just want to add that those of us that are newbies or lack the mechanical aptitude may not have a great deal to contribute other than generalized questions. As a self proclaimed newbie to the 968 arena, I would much rather ask tons of questions (for ones that I would be unable to find answers to) that may seem trivial to someone and expand my knowledge than sit and suffer in the stew of ignorance. It is the only way that people can move beyond the limitations of what they know. After all, everyone had to start at the bottom. However, I also agree that posting for the sake of just that has its place if the discussion is designed for it or warrants it. As the saying goes "there's a time and a place..."

i think the addition of the private message feature will help that a lot - the email function link on the other site did not work on my machine - this pm feature is very cool and easy to use

additionally, it is my hope that, as we add moderators, we can help to keep things on topic- hopefully those moderators will be able to direct off topic items to independent threads - the new features will make it much easier to keep things from getting derailed

i am also very hopeful that the ugly name calling and personal attacking that we have seen on other boards is brought to a halt before it starts - this is where the moderators will need to be very on top of things - there is no room for that kind of behavior, and i don't think anybody wants to see it

as for the number of posts, and any record of it, this is a feature that i wish did not exist - eric is looking into deleting it - it serves no purpose other than to ignite pointless discussions of the relevence or import of a person and/or their posts

this is, until otherwise defined to the contrary, a discussion board - rhetorically, at what point does a discussion become a chat? at what point does one post cease to become relevent or part of the discucussion? even a simple "yup" can be relevent in the proper context - sometimes it is exactly appropriate - sometimes it is possibly unneccessary - with a little luck and perserverence, the moderators can make those decisions

i have already taken advantage of the private message feature, and consequently have enjoyed a more effective means of communicating to individuals, where previously only difficult emailing, or worse having to post direct communication on the public board, were the options avaliable on the other site - this in and of itself will help to curtail the posts that would otherwise seem out of place

definitely 2 steps forward - nice job eric
