Our RS4 is already broken :( !

This is a cross post from Fortitude forums, but I will give you a little background information. My fiances father trader her C4S in for the RS4 so we could have more room, etc... We were the first in NC to recieve one, and we drive it everywhere we can. Right now we are just shy of 3000 miles in just under a month. I will let everyone know what goes on with Audi. To burn clear through 8qts of oil in 3k miles means a terminal failure in my mind. The engine is toast. Since the break in period I have taken it to 8250 as often as I have enough highway <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> . I have a feeling I won't be the only one with this problem, and like the the S2000 the redlines will steadily drop over years to come.



"We got our Sprint Blue RS4 about a month ago. We were the first in our state to recieve ours, so we have aquired about 3000 miles on it as of tonight. Last week the oil temp guage quite working, and the oil warning light came on. This is important because the computer said that the temperature guage was faulty, no other faults. Then tonight my fiance was driving home from going out with her friends and it came on permantly and she said the temp guage was reading higher than normal when it flickered on and off. 220-235 degrees. I have done one track day in the RS4, and it was between 230 and 240 degree's, and she wasn't even in sport mode. So we checked the oil and its not even reading on the dip stick. The car is clear out of oil. Not a drop to be had in the engine. I have topped it off with a couple of spare 20W50 Mobil 1 I had from my Porsche, but I am taking it in tomorrow.



I would also like to ammend that I was all the more careful when I was breaking the car in. I drove it like it was meant to be driven, but I never exceeded any of the RPMS listed in the owners manual for the break in periods. We knew we were keeping this car, so I wanted to take the upmost care with it.



Maybe I am the first with a serious problem .

You put 3,000 miles on the car, frequently have it above 8,000 RPM and drove it in a "track day," and you don't check your oil regularly? That's not using it as the manufacturer intended. If you read the manual, there's language in there that says oil consumption will be higher at higher RPMs. At a minimum, you should check and top up your oil before each outing on the track.



If Audi covers the damage for you, consider yourself VERY lucky. If you tell the service writer at Audi what you wrote here, you most likely will not get it covered under warranty.

I had a new Audi myself about three years ago and sold it after 6,000+ miles. The car simply fell apart. Everything peeled off of the dash, controls, etc. Too many problems to list here. This is not acceptable for a car over $45,000+. I love there design and handling but AOA sucks. My brother who also brought an Audi after driving in mine had the same problems. If that was not worse my other friend who purchased an Audi TT three weeks later had his engine blow coming back from L.A. because several parts on his engine where not properly bolted down. BAD BAD BAD. It will be a long time, if ever, that I purchase another Audi.

Well, on the flip side. For the past 19 years my other cars have been Audi's. The first was a 4OOO CS Quattro that we put 90 K miles on with absolutely no problems. Traded it for a 1993 Audi 100 CS Quattro Station Wagon. In 11 years that car went 247,000 miles. Major repairs were; water pump - one time, steering rack seals - one time, engine cooling fans - one time. Never had the engine opened, same was true for the transmission. The car was totaled in an accident with my wife driving. She had some bruising on her hands from the impact and a minor contusion on one cheek from the airbag deployment.



We now have a 2000 A6 Avant, great car. I put Koni's on it, and I have a set of summer wheels with wider, lower profile tires. the winter tires are the stock size all season tires. Also, put on stiffer anti-roll bars. Car has 90,000 miles on and runs like a scalded dog. I have surprised a few unwary P-car drivers.



After looking at the remains of the car my wife was driving,it occurred to me that short of driving a BMW or a Benz, she likely would have been seriously injured or killed driving anything else. I'm absolutely sold on German engineering and construction quality. The frame was hogged (bent) from the force of the impact, yet the driver and passenger footwells remained intact with no significant intrusion into the passenger compartment.

In that past year, we as a couple have had an A4 3.0, A4 1.8T UltraSport, S4, and an RS4. In the past year, as of today, my fiances' father has bought 31 cars from our Audi dealership. They were all but helpful <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> .



They said that they RS4 engine with its 0W40 oil will burn through a lot during break in. Most people throughout the country are averaging 1qt per 1000 miles. That puts us just double the normal amount. They are looking over everything tomorrow, and then said they are going to send us on our way.



As a disclaimer, on my 968 I check the oil almost daily. On a brand new car, I rarely have checked the oil. It comes with the fact of buying a new car that you have the comfort of not having to do that. On new Mercedes the individual owner can't check his own oil in the first place. I also don't find it abnormal to drive our cars hard, as they are meant to be driven. If Audi knew that it would burn through 1 qt of oil everytime you hit 8250, then they needed to state that in the manual. It does state just like every other car that excessive RPM can lead to failure, etc... and it does state that oil usage may be expected at a maximum of something like 3L per 3k miles. I just don't think its right to have 3k miles on a car and it be out of oil!



Also as a disclaimer, this is the easiest driven car we have bought/owned. Our past 325i did donuts in a parking lot at 7 miles. Why? Why not? The owners manual stated a break in, but our dealer was clear that one was not needed. The C4S, while not being ragged on was driven. The day we traded it in was the day it broke the 2k mile break in. You can guess that I tested its performance.



I hope I don't sound like a moron, but its just how I am. Cars are meant to be driven. They are replaceable. Porsche wouldn't give the new Turbo 480hp if it didn't expect the 480hp to be used daily. Audi gave us 415hp, but doesn't expect it to be used without excessive wear. I'll take that by me adding a chip to my 968 that turns 7800 may cause more than excessive wear, but OEM is OEM.

too right wes, most of the cars you mentioned you have owned are performance cars, and damned right they should be driven too their maximum, imo theres no point having a 420 bhp monster under your right foot, and driving it like miss daisy whats the point wheres the excitement in that, i also own one of audis 4.2 v8s in the s4 guise and boy does it sound wonderful on full chat, especially withthe roof down. go on my son give it beans i say, regards pazzer <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
