i think the addition of the private message feature will help that a lot - the email function link on the other site did not work on my machine - this pm feature is very cool and easy to use
additionally, it is my hope that, as we add moderators, we can help to keep things on topic- hopefully those moderators will be able to direct off topic items to independent threads - the new features will make it much easier to keep things from getting derailed
i am also very hopeful that the ugly name calling and personal attacking that we have seen on other boards is brought to a halt before it starts - this is where the moderators will need to be very on top of things - there is no room for that kind of behavior, and i don't think anybody wants to see it
as for the number of posts, and any record of it, this is a feature that i wish did not exist - eric is looking into deleting it - it serves no purpose other than to ignite pointless discussions of the relevence or import of a person and/or their posts
this is, until otherwise defined to the contrary, a discussion board - rhetorically, at what point does a discussion become a chat? at what point does one post cease to become relevent or part of the discucussion? even a simple "yup" can be relevent in the proper context - sometimes it is exactly appropriate - sometimes it is possibly unneccessary - with a little luck and perserverence, the moderators can make those decisions
i have already taken advantage of the private message feature, and consequently have enjoyed a more effective means of communicating to individuals, where previously only difficult emailing, or worse having to post direct communication on the public board, were the options avaliable on the other site - this in and of itself will help to curtail the posts that would otherwise seem out of place
definitely 2 steps forward - nice job eric
