Facebook - PSA
#1

Nothing new about employers checking LinkedIn sites to see if you're looking for a job elsewhere, but the latest trend seems to be your company's HR dept, as well as prospective employers' recruiting depts searching an individual's Facebook account for content to see if you're bad-mouthing your boss, or if your friends posted a photo of you at last week's party with a lampshade on your head , chugging a bottle of Jack Daniels, etc..

If you wonder why you are hired, or why you even could get fired ( sure, it may not be legal, but try to spend $ 50,000 and two or three years fighting an employer arguing and proving that point.. ) look at what's going on with FaceBook. I've set an account up about a year ago because a bunch of old work friends and soccer teammates wanted me to keep in touch that way, but I'm now having seconds thoughts and am resetting all privacy parameters, closing the wall to posts by anyone else, new friends requests, visibility access, etc, etc. And I really have nothing that could even come close to incriminating content, but I'm not taking any chances. It's both sad and revolting, but I get the sick sense we're slowly moving toward an extreme control environmnet where all the large institutions have run amok with power, while the individuals ( who ironically make up those institutions ) are simply screwed. If Mussolini was alive today, he'd be proud of us.

Just careful what you allow on your FB page !

I try not to post anything I wouldn't share with my boss...I do have some shady friends though (Professor, F18 Pilot, Real Estate Tycoon, 968 enthusiasts etc.)

No interest. If employers start surfing car forums i'll be in trouble.

That's why it is great to be self employed (20Years) in these times. How does your boss police you if you dont befriend him\her on social sites? How do they get access?

Some people leave their profile wide open, especially younger people (my kids). Facebook is pretty much wide open by default, and it takes some real digging to shut it down. I had to follow up with an employee yesterday who had 10,460 text messages last month and she's no kid (well, late twenties probably so that's a matter of opinion), and another who had fewer but managed to rack up $500 in text messages because she was not on an unlimited plan - 10 cents apiece. Try permanently removing a face book account. I'm not sure it's even possible. You can close it but i believe the phrase is "would you like to suspend your account". So its still there on the FB servers awaiting reactivation. As are all of your postings. A permanent paper trail w/ pics.

i don't do any of those dumb sites - i don't spend any time surfing the internet either - i waste too much time yick-yakking as it is - no way i would get anything done if i wasted time there - it's amazing how much i get done now that i have cut out distractions like that and television - now if only i could convince my wife to step away from the monitor we would really be getting somewhere

i attribute out decline in social and communicative skills to those sites too

Bob could not agree with you more. I have these kids come for a job who can't spell, write, fill out an application and are unable to look you in the eye when they speak to you. They can text and type at warp speed(oops dated myself) but little else. Interpersonal communication don't get me started. We had an employee stupid enough to be complaining about her job here which someone showed me on facebook. She was dumbfounded I found out. I was dumbfounded she was so stupid for leaving degrogatory comments about her employee out there to be read.

I especially like how they update their "Relationship Status" to "single" within seconds of breaking up with their latest steady, and the commensurate flood of attention they get from all the other twits in their "circle". Then they inevitably patch things up and have to change it back a few hours later - and they aren't embarrassed by all this?

Have a listen to the following link;

This was a presentation given by Bill Davidow - who is an ex: Silicon valley hot shot. He has a book called "OVERCONNECTED: The Promise and Threat of the Internet". This applies equally to mobile phones and the internet.

Interesting just how easy it is to get information (collated and targeted information) about you from the electronic data we create every day. Big Brother is indeed alive and can track you and knows what you like and dislike.

As per most posts - be very careful what you post.

even benign sites like amazon.com ( at least employers don't search that one to see what your buying habits say about you... or,

who knows, maybe they do <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> ..) track your info so they can suggest what else you should buy <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

So you see messages like :

" Congratulations, you bought Kim Kardashian's biography. People who bought this book, also bought a rope and a stool "

Had to edit my post, I originally had a political figure's name there, but no politics or religion forums rule here, so celebrities are fair game !

I use facebook, maybe a couple times a month or so, it has been unbelievably cool for reconnecting with high school and college friends -- quite a nice experience. 95% of my FB "friends" are in this category.

[Image: laugh.gif][Image: laugh.gif] Some of this cookie tracking is starting to make me uneasy. Cookies are helpful when they hold just enough info about me to assit in remembering me and where i was on the site. Helps w/ log in's, forms etc. Well get this. I went on ebay from my notebook and looked into getting a replacement washer bottle for my BMW. i was signed in and placed a couple items in my watch list. A few days later i visit my mom. During the visit I went to check on her PC, which she hardly uses. I havent been on this PC in over 3 months. I type in ebay.com and right from the home page it says. Here are some items you might be interested in. And there are BMW washer bottles in the center of the page. Granted, I never signed in. it didn't give a welcome back David msg either.

yup - that kind of thing is everywhere - i am dealing with the power company right now that wants to install a "smart meter" - this would broadcast my power consumption patterns wirelessly to the power company - i'm not sure i like the idea of how and when i use electricity going out there to the world - while there is nothing to know, and nothing to hide, it's just wrong in principle

as for those social networking sites, frankly i get pretty offended by people who contact me there first - if somebody wants to meet me, that's fine, but they can do it like civilized people do, in person, or at least on the phone - if they are going to contact me electronically, it had better not be in "newspeak", and they had better take the time to compose a letter properly - this whole "instant gratification" phenomenon is going to be the downfall of social interaction - sooner or later we won't leave our houses, will stay in our little boxes and only interact electronically - that's just sad
