Other than the sidewalks and a few flat areas of the driveway that never see the sun I'm OK on ice this morning, so I'm a go! The dog and I were able to walk up and down the hilly parts with no problem and the streets look fine as expected.



Just checked the forecast which has changed a bit from last night with freezing drizzle in the am and wintry mix in the PM, maybe not a good idea after all. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I wish I could have a job like TV weatherman where I could basically just make wild ass guesses, last one I heard said no problem except possibly up by the Pa border.

Back from the exhaust recording party. My cooling problem got worse as I had steam coming from the motor. No drips from the HCV, it seems to be coming from below as it can't be seen from the top of the car.

Funny thing I had no "steaming" on the way home and the water temp held up. What's happening?

OK, got some good recordings. I was going to post the raw files and still may but I want to do some editing. We did idel, 3K, 5K and some revving, but at 5K, you mostly hear the engine - not the exhaust. The idle sound is great as is the revving, so that's likely what I will post. Stupid me left the CD in my work computer, so I'll have to wait to post the results - sorry.



I'm glad Mark snapped a couple of quick pics...I forgot to take one of the recording setup.



This was a good trial run for me as now I know a little better of what to expect and have some other ideas on mic technique and another hairbrained idea about setting up for an actual drive which should produce some awesome results with the car under load doing whats it's supposed to. I also only used one set of mics and would like to experiment with a couple of different types, so I'll play more on my own and then when there's no chance of crazy weather, we'll do this again!

OK guys and gals...I have the edited clips done. Having trouble posting them here probably due to the file size. I'm going to post them on my site and link to them, so I'll post here when I get that up.



There are big differences between the three and now that I've done this once, I have some other ideas to try and would love to be able to get a bigger variety so we can put together some sort of archive here.



There are two things of note to point out...on the stock OEM, there is a small rattle that is just something loose and on the B&B there is a short flutter noise which was the wind kicking up. I puposely did not use windscreens on these particular mics to get a more raw sound and didn't want to muffle anything in any way, but as I mentioned, these results now give me more ideas.



Bottom line, I think these recordings came out great and definitely demonstrate the differences. Both the RSBarn and B&B cars have the air box mod...stock car does not.

yeah - i knew you'd get noise without a zeppelin or at least a sock - the high frequencies lost are minimal, but the rumble that usually happens is intolerable



lol - not so easy as it seems, eh? that's why i didn't post my other ones - similar "issues" - probably wouldn't be noticed by the layman, but as a sound guy, it made me nuts - i knew i could do better than what i got



oh well - another reason for a get-together, right?

Hmm, its true that the wind makes it tough to listen to at times because the sound almost cuts out, but I got what was going on well enough.



Stock, compared to B&B and RSBarn sounds really quiet!

B&B has a great tone with lots of bass, stock headers I'm assuming? Sounds really nice <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The RS barn exhaust sounds like its got quite a bit of rasp, at least from what I can hear when revving. The 3K rpm and idle sound fine though. Is it the headers that are the main cause of that? Or cold exhaust?

Definitely the header and possibly combined with cold exhaust as the car had been sitting for awhile(90 minutes or so in 36 degree weather) before the recording.



They all sound better under load rather than sitting in a parking lot revving. Standing there, all I could hear was the scream of the engines and very little of the exhaust.

That's actually one of the goofy ideas I'm toying around with is how to isolate the engine from the exhaust for the next series of recording attempts...

I had that problem too. Noticed there was too much engine noise coming through. I had my mic on the passanger side, about 2 - 2.5 feet off the ground pointed down. Maybe eight feet back? It seemed to help a bit. Flash, any insight on the best mic positioning?
