Variocam or hall sensor
#21

Or possibly a faulty throttle position switch? Checking its operation with an analog voltmeter is quite easy - let me know if you don't know how to do it, and I'll see if I can find the procedure and post it. The voltage should show a smooth and steady sweep as you depress the throttle. It's another of those things that's free, and that I would check before replacing any parts.

Also (and another item on the list I posted), along the lines of fuel delivery, it's quite easy (and also free) to check the fuel flow rate.

It would be really helpful with the procedure for checking the throttle thing.

Would underfueling at WOT cause detonation/pinging? The knock sensors would retard the timing, which could explain the flat spots.
