I have 98K on the engine and recently noticed the following...

1. Cold start is normal with no engine noise. After 2-3 minutes of warm up there is a "knocking" sound at the top of the engine in the variocam or center two cylinder vicinity. The noise is present at idle but hard to tell if it is there as the engine is accelerated.

2. Have error code 1235 intermittent variocam. Not sure how long it has been there or if it erases by diconnecting the battery? I have run the car with the connector off and on so this could be the source of the code.

3. Engine seems a little more difficult to start hot.

Change your DME relay for the hot start issue.

Try restting the ECU and see if clears the code for the VC.

Also try removing the variocam switch and seating it back in place firmly a few times. Also be sure that the vanity cover is not hitting the switch and that the cable for the speed control is not hitting it. I get that code periodically and that is how I resolve it.

Also be sure to run the cruise control cable under the vanity cover on reinstallation.

pull the cam cover and do an inspection but i don't think bad sprockets or chain would send that code, might call rs barn and ask. good luck
