engine rebuild
#1

Right chaps i'm thinking of rebuilding my engine, eg steel rods, knife edge crank big valve head, race cams etc fully lightened and balanced, who would you recommend and how much would you budget, as i am going to totally strip the car very soon, well allready took the dash out to get the air con system deleted, it is now going to be a track focused car only, regards pazzer.

i've been told that lightening the crank is a bad idea - the increased impact from the power stroke seems to beat up the bearings

i would call pete about this one - he seems to have the skinny on it

i still plan to do it, but i will be having a new girdle made of 7075 billet, and i will be likely changing the crank to a stronger one - hopefully that will offset the issues

from all that i've read and heard so far, things are a bit behind over there, with those doing things with these cars a bit off the curve - there is a lot of new development over here that hasn't made it over there yet - that may well be what he is after

parts seem to be a lot more expensive over there too

of course i could be off the curve myself - who over there is developing close to 320hp?

Dave, WHO? nobody offers engine internals for performance over here, your lucky to get a bloody exhaust over here for a 968, apart from 9M's sc kit what else is on offer for our engines, dont see any performance cams for sale in the uk, dont see any racing heads for sale in the uk etc etc, any how it only costs 200 quid to ship it over, wont pay taxes and dont declare any new parts once its all built how will customs know.

chris - that was pretty much my thinking too - based on what i've seen, read, and heard, they are pretty much behind the times over there when it comes to these cars - heck, as far as i can tell, they haven't even really caught on to what strut tower braces and such do yet, let alone come up with performance heads, cams, and such

i don't think it's their fault, but rather just that driving plays a much larger role in people's lives here, and consequently we tend to be more aggressive about developing stuff and tinkering

the import duties do a lot in limiting their exposure too

remember, most of the stuff has come together in the last couple of years, so it is likely to take a while to make it over there - i'm sure once it does, then the tuners over there will latch onto it, and start incorporating it into their cars

this probably comes off snoooty, and that is not my intention, just merely making a general observation on the state of development of these cars here versus there

another observation, on average, i do tend to find better examples of stock cars over there, as they do seem to tend to take better care of their cars than many over here do

Havik Racing (on another thread looks like a real poss), you could put the engine in a van and drive there.

i have spoken to rob the owner and he says 6000 euro will get me a basic rebuild, using standard parts, but all blueprinted and lightened, mentioned carrillo rods, race cams etc, and from his experience they are not needed, 270bhp is what he gets on all his rebuilds no less, seems a very knowledgable guy on these engines, that black car in the vid on youtube cost approx 40.000 euro plus donor vehicle. Tony what series are you contemplating to race in next year, atb pazzer <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/cool.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

270 on stock cams is not too bad at all - i assume he is also using stock chip, intake and exhaust

Pazzer, just out of curiosity contact Dave at http://www.customengineeredperformance.com/

He is doing my next engine in concert with Neil Harvey of http://www.performancedevelopments.com/home.php ex F1 mechanic with BMW. Has worked on racing Porsches too. I'd check with Dave first and he can give you a few ideas. Anywhere from mild to wild w/ totally custom made parts if needed. Mine will be a 16v although turbo'd, but still with some totally new designed cams amongst many other parts. Hey no obligations of course but at least you'll get some answers.

Hi Chris (Pazzer)

I am thinking of doing a couple of Britcar rounds and possibly some VLN at the Ring.

My car will likely be outside the regs for the Porsche Club and I don't want to spend money reducing the spec.

2008 will not be a full year for me as I am expecting a new addition to the family, however 2009 I would hope to do a full series of some sort at which time the car should be fullly completed. I love the Nurburgring and therefore may do a full year of VLN in 09.

Cheers

Thats great news Tony, wish i had the cash to go racing, mines to modified to go into most series aswell, but you never know 2009 might be a good year for me aswell, starting my own business in 2008, from the books its looks good in the cash flow department, plus i only work during kids school terms,so plenty of time off, any chance you could email some photo's of your car to chris.parry3@homecall.co.uk if you dont mind that is, cheers pazzer.
