The rebuild begins
#1

Today, we went and retrieved a donor motor. The engine has 49k miles, from a street driven 968. Apart from Variocam service, it appears to never have been touched. We drove a total of 8 hours round trip, and the result is the engine is on a stand at the race shop.

Tomorrow, the teardown begins. We have not fully defined the program yet, but the basics are to build a sleeved motor with forged pistons. Here are some pics from today:

Ha ha, I'm not going to tell you too much, I have a feeling, based on your location, that we might meet on trackWink.

Why a sleeved motor? The Alusil blocks on these cars seem to be bullet-proof. I have mine stripped down to the bare block, and I had the bores measured in three places at a local machine shop who specialized in "exotic" engines, and they told me the block has essentially zero wear, and could go a million miles. It currently has about 115K miles, including a fair bit of track time, albeit DEs only. Just curious...

Sleeved motor will allow for forged pistons. Teardown is complete, my mechanic reported a very nice engine, and it will arrive at the machine shop tomorrow.

Nice project, so what class/series are you building for? I'm pretty much in the same boat, totaled my race car at RA this year, started on the replacement, all stripped down, going to the welder in the next week or so for the cage.

We are planning on sp3 at this time.

block is at the machine shop. We are expecting a report on the block and crankshaft runout soon. Based on what he saw, my mechanic feels that the motor has lead an easy life and expects everything to come back fine.

I thought 968 engines had forged pistons already, as does the 944S2.

Actually, you are correct it seems. Anyway, Michael Mount is doing the engine build, so I am leaving it to the expertsSmile

That's a 1 "man-power" engine!

Is that really progress?

Well, I think it is. We got everything out of the car that we could, including over 4 lbs of wiring. We are going to install the new dash next week, new wiring....pretty much rebuilding the entire interior of the car in anticipation of the engine return. From what I can tell, we are waiting on con-rods,; the block has been cleaned and prepared.

My guess is the engine will be going in mid December, about 3 weeks or so.
