camshaft repair
#1

I'm posting this to the other forum was well - following up on ds968's variocam service topic.

what's latest recommendations or suggestions regarding camshaft service? can teeth or gears be successfully re-welded? or is it best to go with OEM new camshafts? can any racing shop "freshup" my cams?

by the way, the cam teeth on my car look fine to the eye, but at 109K I begin to lose sleep over all the "metal fatigue" stories I've read regarding tooth degradation over time.

what's the latest thinking? many thanks! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I recommend new camshats if the sprocket teeth are in question. There are shops that cut the old sprocket off and weld a new sprocket on and they probably work fine. For the difference in cost, I went with the OEM Porsche camshaft and a new, heavy-duty chain. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I reccomend that you check out the website for RS Barn for rebuilt and performance cams. (see sponsor link on right)

for what it's worth I spoke with the tech at a racing shop that works on a lot of 968's and he said this was a problem he personally has never seen - missing teeth - in particular. when a cam needs to be redone - presumably for some reason other than missing teeth - they send them to a rebuilder and after putting the rebuilt cams in the car proceed to use and abuse'm on the track and have never had a problem with the rebuilt cams. I believe he was speaking of his experience with both rear and front-engine cars.
