camshaft repairs
#1

Guys how do they repair these 968 cams? They say cold welding but what is that? Where do they get the gears from to repair these cams anyway? Are they especially made for them or are they commonaly available? Any info appreciated.

P.S I still have my set of cams available for sale.

Thanks 928s

On the RSBarn site they say they can repair 968 cam's and they offer race quality cams as well. Check out their site.. I'm sure they can answer your questions.

cam repair is typically a process of welding on new material, and then regrinding to make the profile desired - then the whole thing is hardened

the gear is a fairly common part - as it was explained to me though, by one of the guys who does cams for this engine, to install it, lobes have to be ground off, the gear slipped on, and then the lobes welded back on and ground down to profile

hence the cost

i'd love to see a bolt on gear, but i have not found one for this engine

Geez, no kidding about the cost huh? With that much work going into repairing cams <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I guess it wouldn't be any cheaper to just make them from scratch.

Definantly would be cheaper to make them new, but the market is super slim. It might cost $10,000 to perfect 968 cams (not sure, just an off the wall number), but with only probably 2000 potential customers, the profit doesn't match the research and development. Its also hard when a powerful NA 3L costs as much as a low boost turbo system. Which puts more wear and tear? Well an engine at idles at 1300rpms, and doesn't have power until 6k is going to require some abuse to enjoy, but with a turbo your adding more parts and more torque which stresses a lot. I like the idea of the superchargers, but they just aren't for me.
