I am cursed? ... the saga continues.... (water pump/fan)
#1

Hi Guys,

the soap opera continues ... I hope I can provide some entertainment value ... and get some help too (pleeeeease, see the end of the post)

First episode - "The Snatch" - was when a 79 lady bought the car I wanted right under my nose (see my 'hi' post)

Second episode - "Finally" - was when I found a real nice 968 close by, and I bought it ('see the some questions remain' post)

Third installment - "Wait and fix - and wait and fix?" - is when I realized my belts were 8 years old and I better have them changed ... Here is what happend:

I found a local guy who said he could do it. I waited for 1 week (including a perfect driving week end), and after I finally brought in the car, I get a call 1h later -'sorry buddy, don't have the right tools after all, can't even open something, please take the car back, can't do it.' I then searched for other options in the area, and the closest one was in Rochester 1h 50 min away. The next appointment they had was almost 2 weeks out...

I got up at 6am that day (Thursday) to get the car to the shop at 9am when they open so they have time to work on it and I can have the car back on Friday latest. I call in Thursday afternoon - work hasn't even started yet. I call in Friday morning, they took the belts out, but 'they won't finish today'. So I missed the next perfect driving week end. Then, the car gets ready on Monday, and I go through every contortion to make time to pick it up on Tuesday. I pay, walk outside to start the car and - nothing! It just won't start up at all! When I brought it in, it started perfectly fine ... turns out they left the hood light on over the week end and .... The battery was original Porsche, purchased May 2011.

Forth episode - "The battery"

So they jump start the car and off I go, on my 1h 50min drive. When I arrive home, the car still won't start. I check the battery - one cell is low. I fill it up, buy a charger and charge it overnight. The next morning, the battery shows 10.3V...... so off I go and buy myself a new one. I plug it in, and the car just starts up beatifully! Everything great, right?

Fitfh episode - "What now !?!"

Wrong! I drive the car, all seems fine, but I notice that the car gets a bit hotter than normal, especially when I drive slow/wait at a light. Also, when I switch off the car, everything is quiet. Before the 'repair', I could hear something running after I switch off the car (I assume the water pump/fan). Now, just silence. I drove the car this morning (a little harder), I parked it, and the the coolant overboiled. I may not have had the cap on right, but it happened again to lesser degree later (I filled it up obviosly). I suspect that since the WP is not running after the the engine is stopped, and the coolant gets too hot locally, generating the boil. Driving is fine, the gauge stays in the mid range, but after that... It also helps to leave the car on after I stop, because that seems to leave the pump on...

So in here are my questions:

- What is supposed to be running after the engine stops? Water pump? Fan(s)?

- And now, if they are not, what could that be? Is there a fuse that I can check? A relay maybe? Is there something that they forgot to connect in the shop when they did the WP change?

- Is it OK to drive the car if I watch the temp gauge and keep it in mid range?

Please help, I am getting emotionally exhausted here.... Such a nice car, but I just want it to run right - as it did before I brought it to the shop. Lets make this a soap opera with a happy ending!

Your cooling fans should be running after you shut the car off. Unfortunately, we've all been to "that shop", and it doesn't get any better so don't go back! I'm in the middle of researching my busted taillight, but if somebody doesn't get back to you with the cooling fan sensor info, you can probably find it quicker here on the forum than I can.

Don't lose faith in your car....you've just had a rough start but 968's, once sorted out, are very reliable.

There are others who I hope will chime in that are far more expert than me, but let me provide some basic answers.

Depending on your engine temperature (coolant) there are electric fans that come on to provide additional cooling. You will hear them when you are at a stop light if the temps are high enough. You should also see the temp guage move down once the thermostat kicks them on. Often, they will continue to run for 10 or 15 secs after you shut down. It sounds to me as if a connector was knocked loose, or was not properly reconnected after the belts were installed. This would also explain why your temps are rising at a stop light yet are normal as you drive at speed. If it's not a connector, I suspect a relay might be then next place to look or in the fuse panel.

As to the water pump, it is mechanical and driven by the engine turning so when the engine is off the water is not recirculating.

I would look at these in order:

-Find the electric fans and trace the electrical connection to see if perhaps they were not properly connected after the work was completed.

-Refer to the owners manual to find the location of the fuse box and review the fuse chart to see which fuse controls the cooling fans. Check that fuse with a multi-meter or if you don't have one, simply replace the fuse with the appropriate fuse as specified by the fuse chart.

-Locate the relay for the cooling fans and have the local mechanic check the relay for proper function (unless you are able to do this yourself).

Flash, Cloud anybody please chime in here and let's help this new 968 lover get his confidence back!

There's an excellent cooling system electrical diagnosis write up somewhere on this forum. I used it successfully to find an issue I had - a disconnected wire.

I have it in PDF form if you can't find it. Just email me.

I would venture that they did the work and forgot the connector for the fans when they buttoned it up.

I second Dave's venture.. but if all else fails, the following page at Clark's Garage gives the procedure to test the Fan relay..

You own an almost 20 year old car.. Don't be afraid to get down and dirty with her.. Go find a copy of the workshop manual in PDF form, it's invaluable, even if you don't do your own work.

I empathize with your situation... winter is coming here and I've got a good month wait until the parts arrive to resurrect my newly bought 968 (which also has cooling issues).

Thanks everyone for you support and your suggestions! You guys are great!

I checked, and it was just that the connector from the relay box was not connected to the fans ..... I guess the shop would have needed another day to 'do the job right', since this is the excuse they gave me for being 2 days late on the belt job.... I just hope they did that one better.

I also checked out all the documents Jerry and others mentioned - lots of good information here! Thanks again, now is be off dring the car
