Wow, entire forums devoted just to detailing. Either they're mainly for people in the business, or some people have WAY too much time on their hands <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

This was a topic of a long discussion on the BMW E90 - E93 forums, but seriously, does anybody really think they could tell the difference in the degree of shine between reputable waxes, given that the surface was prepared properly (well washed and clayed)? I could understand in a Consumer Reports-type test, in which identical sheets of painted sheet metal were waxed with the different products at the same time, allowing the evaluators to repeatedly inspect them side by side in optimal lighting conditions. But the way most of us detail our cars, i.e. once every few months, without any type of "standard" to compare our result to, makes it impossible, imho, to tell the result of one wax apart from any other.

But I guess I'm focusing too much on waxing, as there are of course many other aspects to detailing a car. I never cease to be amazed at the fact that there seems to be an active forum available for every activity/hobby/interest imaginable, which is really a very good thing.
