The past two times I've had the car out I've noticed the fuel gauge "floats" about 1/8 tank above and below the actual reading. Are there any normal causes of this condition? It happens no matter how much fuel is in the tank. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blink.gif[/img]

I'm not sure how the 968's fuel sender work,and PET is not very enlightening on this, but I know in my 356 this happened when the fuel in the tank splashes around. I believe modern cars have electronics to even out the signal, so my guess is that you fuel sender is not working correctly anymore

there is a baffle in the tank that is there to prevent the sender from getting bounced around and has been known to pop loose - that is probably what happened

I had problems with both fuel and temp gauges bouncing. Resolved this by tightening the nuts on the back of the gauges which I believe are the earth connections to the printed circuit.

if it "bounces" (quicker change) it's probably electrical - if it "floats" (slower change) it's probably mechanical

It definately floating. And it does seem to be related to the fuel moving in the tank. Going up or down rolling hills on the highway can cause it, even a slight decline going out of the driveway. I know the level will change some when on an incline but this happens on anything other than perfectly level ground.

Flash, how hard is it to get to this baffle? I would check the manual or pet but don't have either of them at work.

pretty sure you've got to drop the tank - that means dropping the transaxle

In my 92 it is possible to acces the floater from above the tank. The entrance is under the carpet in the trunk. But it's a tip, Don't know if a 6 speed is different.

i don't think it's any different - i know the sender is there at the top, but i'm not sure about the baffle
