Just as a side note - I have done this mod twice trying many different paths. Seems to work best as described - AL foil! Stock bulbs supply plenty of brightness if you get the shiny side of the Al foil the right way up

Has anyone tried changing the light color. Are red bulbs available and would they produce enough light?

i've tried red, yellow and blue, as well as different wattage bulbs - i am currently running higher wattage white bulbs with red caps on them - "ok" but i'm not sure i'm happy yet

Flash, where did you find the red caps?

silvy turned me onto them - i'll see if i can find the vendor - there is a very real limit to the wattage they can handle though, so if you are looking for anything but dim, forget it

"Flash, where did you find the red caps?"

You must be kidding. He went to the "Red Film" supply house, purchased 6 sq. in. of film, AutoCad designed a mold, built a prototype, tested the fit three times (with each dash disassembly triggering the airbag light), measured the lumens in six different angles, fabricated the caps to meet specifications, and may not be happy.

Welcome to the Flash world!

I have been experimenting with the LED's. I just put blue in the 3 dash lamps. It looks good. They only slightly change intensity with the dimmer switch tho.
There is a vendor on E-bay that has a completely different LED set-up that I may look into. It does involve cutting away the reflector part of the dash insert.

UPS dropped off my new gauge frame earlier this week. The outside of the reflective surface looks amazing. PO must have refinished it already. I still may upgrade my bulbs again as I cant remember what I put in there the last time.

I'm well aware of the "Flash World" we replaced my brake lines the other week and I spilled the whole cup of dirty brake fluid on his spotless garage floor three times. Luckily he was getting sick and was thus too exhausted to chase me around the garage with a tire iron.

I found a simple fix for our dash lighting. No cutting, modding or rigging required.

Having just picked up a coal company as a client, I can truly appreciate this rig.

I'm curious - what "problem" is trying to be solved with the instrument panel lights? Now that I have all three lights working, I'm having to turn down the rheostat because they're too bright. (I know - the next question is "What bulbs are in there?" - and it's been so long since I looked, I don't remember.)

yup - i agree - i have always been turning them down, even when stock - i am just trying to change to red on mine, to further reduce glare and further improve night vision - i haven't done enough driving at night yet though to see if i got it right or not

I'm looking at the e-gauge site for the red caps and they list different sizes. Anyone know which size is right for us - type A, B, D or E/C?

Hi guys,

Just wondering whether anyone has also replaced the bulbs behind the fan and temperature knobs? I'm changing my instrument cluster setup to white LEDs (link below) and would like to match the lighting of the knobs to be white vs. the current incandescent bulbs.

cheers,

milton

You will be hard pressed to find LED's small enough to fit the mini bulbs in the switches. Add to the limited space will be a current limit resistor; no room IMHO.

Hi all, hope you're all still enjoying your 968's over the half decade since the last post in this thread! I've searched the forum and still at a loss for 3 answers:

1. Has anyone had an issue where only the gauge illumination lights are out and all the indicator lights and other illuminated areas of the dash (cigarette lighter, etc.) are still alit and dimming properly? Is it all-or-nothing, or are the gauge illumination lamps that common to die without affecting anything else?

2. Is there a cluster removal step-by-step process? I've read many of the threads and only hear of the fixes after it's been removed. I read (somewhat anecdotally) in a post that the steering wheel needed to be removed?

3. Has anyone done a full dash replacement or used one of the "custom molded" solutions to cover theirs? My '93 cab's dash is toast and hiding beneath a cheap-ass fabric cover... that has to change.

THANKS!
