I went through about four of these in my old 944. Two days ago my DE instructor leaned on it and it broke off. I told him no big deal, as these are amazingly cheesy to begin with. So, two questions:
1. Does anyone make a viable alternative? I think someone used to make a metal version, but I've never seen it.
2. Is is the same exact part for late 944s?
Thanks,
Bill

<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> perhaps if the girl in your avatar did the damage, things would've been OK.

I know guys have replaced the hinge with a piano hinge in the past. Seemed to work well if put in straight.

Well, I probably will end up buying one of the oem deals (maybe 2 or 3). I know I will have further breaks in future.

I'll see if I can get a picture of one with the piano hinge fix. It should be permanent as the hinge becomes a metal part...
I put in a piano hinge years ago not long after I bought the car (and broke the original hinge by leaning on it). It's been fine since, and I've leaned on it plenty. I suppose the small line of brass is slightly out of place in the leather and plastic interior but it doesn't bother me.
Sounds worth while. Somebody get a pic.

The piano hinge I was was painted black. It didn't stand out at all unless you've had to fix one before.

Is a piano type hinge available at Home Despot type places?
