Damn center console hinge!
#1

I went through about four of these in my old 944. Two days ago my DE instructor leaned on it and it broke off. I told him no big deal, as these are amazingly cheesy to begin with. So, two questions:

1. Does anyone make a viable alternative? I think someone used to make a metal version, but I've never seen it.

2. Is is the same exact part for late 944s?

Thanks,

Bill

Same as 944. I think you get one for 30 buck includeing shipping on ebay. Factory Porsche part.

I have replaced it on my 944 several times as well.

I have never heard of the alternitive.

I just went thru the same thing, My GF Leaned on mine. But I did not tell her "no big deal" I took it out on her A$$.

<img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> perhaps if the girl in your avatar did the damage, things would've been OK.

I know guys have replaced the hinge with a piano hinge in the past. Seemed to work well if put in straight.

I've heard about, but have never seen, the piano hinge fix. I think I'm on my fourth or fifth "hinge".

I just cant see spending $5 and 1 hour's time to fix a $30 part.

I wouldn't mind spending the time and a few bucks if the result is a REAL fix. The question is - is it a real fix?

Well, I probably will end up buying one of the oem deals (maybe 2 or 3). I know I will have further breaks in future.

Smokie, nice pic! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'll see if I can get a picture of one with the piano hinge fix. It should be permanent as the hinge becomes a metal part...

I put in a piano hinge years ago not long after I bought the car (and broke the original hinge by leaning on it). It's been fine since, and I've leaned on it plenty. I suppose the small line of brass is slightly out of place in the leather and plastic interior but it doesn't bother me.

One could always convert to the coin tray....

I converted the ash tray to a coin tray. (Well, maybe "converted" is too strong a word, but that's what it's used for. I removed the little piece on which butts were put out and lined it with felt. Works well.)

The piano hinge I was was painted black. It didn't stand out at all unless you've had to fix one before.

I don't know if I found a thin piano hinge locally but I bet you can order it (and virtually any other mechanical item or material) from mcmaster.com

McM is absolutely one of the best companies in the country and a terrific resource for any out-of-the-ordinary DIY project.

Painting it black sounds like a good idea.
