Crappy Day
#1

The 968 has been a bit neglected of late. We took 2 weeks vacation and I have come back to the following issues;

- Flat Battery

- Brake Dust has corroded Alloys

To make it worse, when simply getting into the car, one sunvisor clip broke and then later in the day, the other one broke. Do these things have a design flaw or are engineered to fail at the same time?

Getting to the battery (so you can open the rear hatch to get to the battery) is a real pain. Had to enlist my daughter to crawl back there to put a battery pack onto the battery, to get the hatch open and then jump start it. It is now on a charger.

Sometimes your luck just runs out.

I thought the BMW X5 was the only car with the idiotic design "feature" of not allowing you to open the rear hatch to get to the battery when the battery goes dead. Is this not the definition of stupidity? I felt like I was in a "Dilbert" cartoon, crawling back the in the sweltering heat of a Texas summer to unearth the battery.

And yes, those visor clips seem to be made of paper mache, but replacement metal ones cost something like $40 apiece!

Hope your luck improves soon.

Does the coupe not have the emergency cable behind the door vent like the cabs?

After 18 years my sun visor clips broke one day apart. Amazing to hear an equivalent story. Talk about planned obsolescence! On the plus side they're cheap at $1.27 and plentiful (at least in the US).

Howdy Craig. Sounds like you need to give it a full noise run, then all will be fine again!

P.S The battery charger I run on mine is made by CTEK, awesome kit with permanent battery connections so its sooo easy and it also conditions the battery.

Re clips, mine went too!

P.S Porsche at Bathurst in Easter 2013 will see us getting five sessions of 20 mins each = just under 2 hours on this legendary circuit. Hope to see you there.

Mark,

When do the entries come out. I was going to do Drive Bathurst this year, but it didn't happen, so went to the race instead.

Not sure I will be able to make it, but depending on costs will most likely try to.

Craig

Cloud,

Check the owner's manual for the X5. My Q7 has the battery in the back as well, but there are charging posts in the engine bay for charging and jump starting. A much more civilised idea.

Those visor clips are notorious for not aging well.

If that makes you feel better: my visor clips broke as well - when I took my wife for a ride the first time after I bought the car - after she had complained for three days straight of how this is not a family car, that I paid too much, and that she would never buy a car that old because things break all the time. She just started to like the car a bit five minutes into the ride, then wanted to flip the visor ...

On the upside, the clips are cheap and easy to replace. Make sure the get the washers off the old clips - sometimes they are stuck, and you may miss that they are there and throw them away with the old parts. I realized this when I changed the second clip and finally noted the washers ...
