Heater Control Valve
#41

Dave I fited the metal valve from the Audi about two years ago and it has been working just fine. No installation difficulties (see Bruce Wards excellent writeup in the DIY section). I didn't use the JB Weld method for the vacuum hose attachment, just bought a longer piece of the vacuum hose and made a larger coil - it works just fine. Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

So do these plastic parts fail often? Or only when they are old? I just ordered a plastic replacement HCV from Paragon, but I figure if the original lasted this long, a new one should last just as long. Right?

I have all three and am going to install the metal/plastic hybird. Looks plenty solid and and the metal housing is crimped to the stury plastic nipple. If I were not planning on tracking the car, I might go for factory all plastic part.

I've looked and been unable to find the all metal Audi HCV. They've been replaced by a part metal and part plastic unit. At more money than the Porsche part. Not sure there's a gain.

Most of the AutoZones I have visited in looking for this part here in Los Angeles, have had the metal valve in stock. I had found it harder to find the metal/plastic, that I like better and seems better configured for installation.

Tim at Sunset imports (AUDI) has the all metal valve available.

TimHaburn@sunsetimports.com

Here are the details:

"The part number we will use is ZZZ-PER74671, this is a non-factory part. As for a description it is a all metal replacement valve. "

I do not know if that is the Audi part #. Check with time via e-mail and he may be of help.
Wow, this is a very useful thread cause I had the HCV split and fail just like the somebody said! Lucky I had a OEM spare around, but I think I will get a metal one just the same - that lump of plastic must get pretty toasty so close to the header. Thanks to everyone for the PN etc!
If you find someone who still sells the no-longer-made all metal HCV valve replacement, I'd very much appreciate their phone number so I could order a couple or so. They are not available around here...and even though the outlets (NAPA, AutoZone, etc.) show the all metal part on their catalog order screen, when the ordered parts actually arrive, they are part metal and part plastic. Apparently the original supplier no longer makes the all metal HCV. However, there probably are a few of these sitting on shelves someplace.

If you actually can get your hands on an all metal unit, you'd be helping out a bunch of us by posting the contact information since I think you'll find that, once the metal units are gone, there won't be any more.

I'd hadn't seen the Sunset reference. I'll check with Tim today but I'm doubtful he'll have it. If so I'll I post.

Harvey, I put mine in last fall that I ordered from Sunset. Just ask for the replacement unit for the 968. They'll know what you want.

Sunset is out of the all metal HCV part...and would have to order from the aftermarket supplier...and they told me this morning that they didn't think the all metal was available any more. My bad for waiting until I needed one.
