Lost AC & power steering belt

Hi

(I hope this is in the right section)


So, long story short. I was driving and lost my alternator & AC belt. I think it took out the power steering belt when it came of. So i had no power steering, alternator & AC.

I managed to drive home with all the electrics turned off (ac/lights/radio/etc). 

When I reached down to check on the AC compressor, I could move it.. Just by pushing it. So I guess a bolt broke off or fell out of the AC bracket. 

 

I lost the following belts

999.192.299.50 A/C & Alternator V Belt

999.192.236.50 V Belt


But now I have no clue on what to do. I did some research on this topic and found the following options:

 

OPTION 1: replace the AC compressor / bolts / bracket

OPTION 2: buy an AC delete kit, and just move the alternator down (i don't use AC, so i'm considering this option)

OPTION 3: get a shorter belt for the alternator, as an emergency solution (check this topic )

I can't recall all of the details, but if I remember correctly the AC tensioning bracket is a known failure item (it hasn't happened on mine).

 

Here is one past solution, Design 1 Racing has a replacement tensioner that is stronger:  http://shop.design1racing.com/968-AC-Tensioner-Kit-ACT1.htm.   But I have a feeling he isn't making these anymore.

Option 1...and, unfortunately it could happen again if you don't have the A/C tensioner replacement by D1R. Known weak point...

So my belts came off today same ones. If Flash is no longer making them is the OEM available? Anybody know the part number? How do you know if the adjuster is toast or just out of adjustment?

william - you're not being clear. Do you want the belts number or the adjuster number? Adjusters are relatively cheap and available from several sources, Paragon being one. In my opinion failures of this part are due to the multi-step sequence of bolt loosening/tightening. If you don't do it right things will get bent, or fall off, or loosen on their own.

 

I've lost a couple of these belts, because the belt itself failed from too much tension - and thankfully never (yet!) from the tensioner itself failing.

Well I found out today the culprit is the a/c compressor, where one of the bolts went thru it cracked off allowing the belt to come off. So now have to get a new compressor as well as new belts and a radiator hose. It appears when the belt came off it took a chunk out of a radiator hose.

Yes the a/c compressor is $725 then labor and new Freon puts it about $1200. I am looking at getting the a/c compressor from Autozone. comes with a lifetime guarantee Same price.

fixed.


I dropped the car of at a Porsche/Merc/BMW dealer. There was an older guy at this shop who used to work on transaxle Porsches, I explained my problem and he said it was a well known failure. 

A week later, the car is back in shape Smile Let's see how it holds up ..

 

Now I discovered a new problem, but i'll make a new topic for that.
