Confession....
#1

The new Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice. I can't help myself. I think they are cool. Guy in my neighborhood is a ExecVP for GMAC and has a black Solstice for his toy. Sorry- but it is a cool looking car. And the Sky in the right color looks awesome....

Flame suit on.... Prepare for hazing....

One vote no (Hate the nose on the Solstice)..

One vote Yes...The Sky looks cool, especially the Redline Version.

Only negative on both is the convertible top is the worst quality material I have ever seen.

yeah - hard to argue with the performance numbers of the hopped up solstice - aesthetically a bit too sci-fi for my tastes, as is the little lotus, but interesting nonetheless

i think both the lotus and the solstice would look great if they were a foot longer - i should grab a shot and photoshop stretch it to see

IMO, both have nice lines and turn many heads (for now). It does indeed look like a high priced car. Which is why, for the life of me, I cant understand why they put such a weak engine in them. That kind of mismatch has got to hurt sales.

I understand the redline pulls about 100 more Hp over the stock. Thats quite a gap!

i think the lines could be really nice if they were a bit longer and less abrupt - i love the curves, but think they just look a bit cartoony being as short as they are - i tend to like big swoopy curvy lines on cars, and dislike any hard edges, which they had to implement on these short cars in order to transistion from one curve to another

i really need to buy a muira and get it over with

I think both the Solstice and the Sky are very good-looking cars. Between the two, I like the Sky a little better, but I think both are bold departures from GMs conservative designs of recent years (decades?).

That being said, sadly, the execution of these cars doesn't deliver on the promise made by the styling. I've read several road tests on them in different magazines, and the same themes keep coming up - these cars are several hundred pounds overweight, their base engines are coarse and noisy, the gear ratios are badly spaced, the interior ergonomics are a mess, top operation is inconvenient, reliability has been poor, etc. The GXP and Redline versions of the cars bring a lot more power to the party via their turbocharged engines, but it's sad that they need to do that to overcome the weight.

While it isn't as exciting to look at, the Mazda MX-5 (The Sports Cars Formerly Known As The Miata) is a clearly superior vehicle in almost every respect. It pains me to say that, as I would love to see the domestic manufacturers grab back some of their eroding market share by producing cool and desirable cars, especially sports cars, and there have been a few glimmers of hope lately (the Ford Fusion and GMC Acadia/Buick Enclave are competetive vehicles in their respective categories, and the Corvette is of course an amazing vehicle), but GM unfortunately came up a little short with the Solstice/Sky. But they are cool to look at, and that will be enough for many buyers.

i like both too, and the new one is probably a better car to drive - both about the same price - both WAAAAAAY out of my league

i'll probably have to settle for a ford GT (the new 40)

they sure do a great job of getting the best angle on the car - looks good from that angle - in person it looks a lot choppier

I may be wrong, as I dont know skys, but in that pic the car may have an after market kit on it. And I dont believe those rims are stock.

could be - i've only seen a couple of them and frankly couldn't get over the "cadillac" front end lines, so i didn't pay all that much attention

I'd still rather have my old S200 back then either of them. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Solstice and Sky ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

but seriously folks... I also think another foot or more added to the length of both cars would have been a huge aesthetic improvement ..and yeah, the nose on the solstice; not very attractive IMO. Otherwise I think they're very cool looking and the turbo versions of both models are pretty quick.

as for the new MX5 "miata" - just finished watching a review on tv about an hour ago; very impressive all around.

There's something though which I can't get over, realizing this is all subjective : all of these cars - miata, solstice, sky, S2000, Lotus elise - look like toys that belong on a FAO Schwartz shelf. Granted, they're very fast and fun toys <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> , but still.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I like the Sky much more. I think this one shares parts and chassis with an Opel. I remember seeing some illustrations of the new Opel model and was in love. Never was really much of a fan of Saturn cars, still not but I have to admit that they are getting better. With the Opel Astra on the way to being under a Saturn badge, they should have a great car. As long as they don't try to cheapen it as what happens to many of the cars that come over from Europe.

But while we are talking about convertibles, I do like the VW Eos. If it were to get the 3.2 VR6 engine and 6spd manual, man what a nice car it would be though a little nose heavy.
