Light Weight Flywheels and Air Con

Hi,

I know that there has been lots of posts on light weight flywheels. After Bathurst, I had trouble selecting gears when on the track, but not when driving around a road speeds/loads. At our track day today, it would appear that the clutch has failed in some way (fingers bent) and may be causing the shifting problems (don't know if I have damaged the gearbox at all, but it is coming out for an inspection as well). Another 968 competing in Targa Tasmania also had problems not being able to shift gears above 4,000rpm that was tracked down to a clutch problem (not gear box).

So I am back into the dilemma of whether or not to install a light weight flywheel. My mechanic has told me that the lightweight flywheel will struggle to cope with the A/C cutting in an out and will possibly stall the car. Has anyone had experience with this occurring. Being Australia (but currently heading towards winter), an A/C is sort of mandatory over here.

I would also be interested in opinions good and bad from those that have fitted a light weight flywheel and whether it has made any discernible difference on the track and road (i.e. how many seconds a lap did it make) and pros/cons of the various brands out there.

The car is predominately used for track days with some road driving occasionally. I am also looking at either supercharging it or possibly letting Peter Fitzgerald Racing convert it to a Turbo RS (depends on cost).

I have a light weight RS flywheel in my car and the A/C has never caused any concerns. I'm more worried about adopting a new driving style fo r the SC as it does have this issue.

i ran the 12lb for years - no issues with the AC - running it with the SC is a different story - i am now running the 18lb RSB unit with no problems (though i think it would have a few had i not added the S2 dampener)
