Cheap Coupe in My Area
#1

This popped up on the DC Craigslist today...has some issues just by looking at the pictures, but could probably be had for less. I'll go take a look if anyone's interested.

It doesn't look all that bad. It looks like a very averge car, with the type of wear-and-tear you'd expect after that many years. From the pictures, it needs the drivers seat bolster repaired, the left rear body panel gasket replaced (or at least glued back in), a variety of trim pieces, and it looks like it has a scrape on the left front fender. Plus the antenna mast is missing. And it most likely needs the usual assortment of mechanical work - belts, hose, Variocam chain pads, rear main seal, head gasket, possibly rod bearings, etc. At anywhere near this price, it could be a good car for someone who has the time and the inclination to do the work himself. If not, like every other 968, I bet it will require $15 - 20K, including the purchase price, to turn it into a nice example, assuming the paint underneath the rain drops is in good shape.

This seems to be a recurring theme - to get a really nice 968, prepare to spend around $20K, either at the time of purchase for one that's been meticulously maintained, garaged, and that has had all the major work recently done, or over time on one in more "average" condition.

The condition as indicated by the photos seems to be on par with my Coupe when I got it. Mine needed lots of little things and a bunch of cleaning and I paid a lot less than the 6900 in this ad. Of course, we can't tell anything about mechanicals from the photos, but I'd assume it will need all the "regular" stuff like belts, bushings, etc. The biggest thing that scares me about this car and this ad is the fact that the odometer may be broken....seems too convenient that it's set at 000 plus what looks to be a partial tenths and the gas tank isn't full.

I am new to the forum and this will be my first post (apart from the the intro), so, thanks for having me on here gentlemen!

I am in the market for a 968 and live in the DC area. I saw this car on craigslist and was really hoping to go check it out. It is basically the exact model of vehicle that would bring me perfect happiness in this life (I adore the 968).

Unfortunately, I am out of town this week, so if you can go check this car out and report back I would be most grateful Darryl!

A couple concerns I had from the photos:

1. The driver's side interior door lock knob appears to be missing.

2. The photos link to (presumably) the sellers' photobucket page. There are lots of other cars posted there (including a black 928), as well as furniture, appliances, and a few questionable shirtless photos. I don't know exactly why, but this makes me a bit skeptical.

Already the few posts here and the vast amount of other amazing information I have absorbed through my first couple days on this forum have alerted me to the kinds of things I should be looking for with this vehicle and 968's more generally.

Thanks again!

Just a FYI. IMA Motorsport in Chantilly cab perform a PPI. This past week we have had 3 968s in for a service.

Car is legit...drove it tonight...and didn't see anyone shirtless!! Definitely has some issues but nothing that a little cash and TLC couldn't rectify. My suspicion about the odometer being broke was spot on...dead as a doornail.
