Lol, no kidding . But you have to take in consideration the typical mentality of the buying public ; no matter how many times car experts, mechanics, etc. will tell you that a 20 year old garage queen vehicle with mileage that low will need a major overhaul, no one is going to believe that until they actually experience it, so they'll pay a ton of money for what they consider essentially a brand new car, as opposed to spending a similar sum for a car that's in a completely different league and one which has been meticulously maintained on top of it all..simply based on the mileage factor. Stupid, but that's the reality.

Depends how those miles were put on the car ; if the car was driven just 5 or 6 miles EVERY WEEK , or say, at least twice a month for a short " run " throughout all those years, there's not all that much that it'll need, just a few basics . But more likely than not it probably just sat around for looooong periods of time without driving or even starting , in which case yeah, good luck to the buyer who thinks he / she is getting something in great shape . ( btw, he/she is not a reference to Caitlyn Jenner ..although I can certainly see "her" driving that amethyst 968 around L.A. -- as long as it's not on PCH again - but I digress..) Did you guys look at the other cars this dealer is advertising ? I'm not familiar with those vehicles market value vs. what he's asking for them but I wonder if some are just as out of whack as the 968 is. That said, all it takes is a buyer with money and a severe case of OCD for a particular car, and who knows..there is always a chance . Gotta start somewhere .

i am certainly enjoying the recent attention these cars are getting.  it bodes well for anybody selling a special one, and doesn't hurt anybody selling a normal one either.  it may also tend to make some people rethink whether they keep their car or not.  this generally helps with keeping the community alive and active, and upgrades the owner base to collectors more than mere owners.  what you end up with is a smaller number of cars, which would happen either way, but a higher level of condition of the ones that remain.

 

not good news for buyers though, and if somebody is thinking about buying one, they should do it now, before prices are on the moon, like they are now with 993 turbos.

But back on Topic, my consideration on the cars undervaluation which is of course subjective is the costs of parts and availability.  Many items can be had fairly inexpensive after market but those that are "Porsche" are high and for those maintaining their cars as many do with OEM parts have to ask a reasonable price for their cars which have been typically low.  I think it has to do with several factors. One of which is that most 968 owners are rather conservative though are willing to shell out the specified amount to maintain their cars.  They are typically well maintained which means that more than a few are still around even though the original numbers are low.  I think being conservative as a general principle the tendency is to undervalue the investment not realizing the "true" replacement cost.  That is certainly one factor, the other significant factor is what else is available for the money?  How it compares to new BMWs Mercs etc presently. Yeah well if you want to drive what everyone else is, the new cars have their value in advanced this and that.  So its what captures the "spirit" and a lot of people aren't aware of this car, which is why I suggest the auction as an approach.  People that don't know about this car are likely to be captivated as I was.  Mine was tucked away in a back lot and somewhat neglected.  I couldn't believe it was a Porsche which is not one of my favorite marks to begin with... but this car had a personality that made me smile, so I bought it and its been a lot of fun. But I drive it daily and enjoy its distinctiveness daily unlike some of the other examples here which are brought out for special occasions and so highly maintained. You guys aren't asking enough IMO.

Thanks. I was going to say Porsche isn't bashful about the prices they charges for parts, so I see no reason for sellers to be bashful about the prices they calculate for the value of their cars. Its a sleeper no doubt and pictures don't do the car justice.

Guy walked up to me a Summit Point this weekend and gushed "Ilove your car", so I said want to buy it. He asked how much and for giggles I said 40. The look of pure disappointment was palpable. He just thought he couldn't afford it. Wildcat I agree.

Just received an email from eBay re this car with the title :   " Almost gone !  "   Clicked on the details and the extent of the additional info posted is  :  "   11 people watched this item in the last week  "     .  Oh boy, if ELEVEN people WATCHED this 968 in the last week, it's practically as good as sold, so someone better hurry to buy it,  eh ?      :lol:

I just think its a hard sell on e-bay with just a photo... but when people see the car in person, its another story.  Some people think its a little Ferrari and then say "oh its a Porsche, never seen one like that..."  Compare the price difference... seriously.

I have noticed that the prices for 968's have been creeping upwards.

 

I am happy about that, since I can use it as leverage to justify to the wife why spending money on the 968 is not a "black hole".
