Headlight won't raise via motor or hand
#1

Hello,

I recently had the battery die and took it out to recharge it.  After replacing the battery the driver's headlight wouldn't raise anymore.  Coincidence?  Bad timing?

I first went through fuses 2, 20, 21, 37, 38.  All fuses when placed in the checker lit the bulb, so I assume that means they're fine.

I have read in some threads about a relay being involved with the headlight motor but I can't see any relay listed in the fuse chart for such.  Which relay is it and how do I test a relay?

Lastly, I tried the manual raise knob (which now looking at it suspiciously is missing its cap), but the headlight wouldn't raise.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong?  Turning counter-clockwise it felt snug like it wouldn't go anymore, turning clockwise loosened the screw more and more but did nothing to the headlight position.

Please help!  I'm drowning in what feels like conflicting information.

1) Would there be any relation to having the battery out to the headlight not raising afterwards?

2) Did I check all the correct fuses?

3) Is there a relay involved here I should be checking?

4) Should the light raise when I turn the plastic screw, or am I doing something wrong?

5) Is the cap missing from the manual screw damaging?  Could rain then get inside without this cap and mess things up?

Thanks for the assistance to a still-968 noob.

Cheers,

David

there is a relay.  it's a big one.

the mechanisms tend to freeze up.  they need some periodic lubrication.

Flash, is it relay G17+18?  "Control unit light combination"?

If the motor freezes, would that explain it not raising even by turning the motor knob?

Here's a ton of info: they talk about pulling a fuse when operating a headlight manually. You might just find what you need on Clarks-Garage.com

Search for "BODY-05, Headlight Motor Circuit - Operation and Repair"

Good luck.

Okay, I found with a lot of turning I can manually raise the light.  It does not lower by itself afterwards if I toggle the light switch.  Next step is getting a buddy to stand next to the light and listen for the motor activating I guess to see if it's an electrical or lubrication problem.  In the meantime I have the old stereo out and am working in the new one (priorities, right? Rock)

Mine was relay and just a bit of contact cleaner took care of the problem. Hope yours is that simple.

Thanks Jay, I found a tutorial online how to check a relay with a multitester and a car battery.  I hope you're right!  Going to give it a shot this weekend.  Inspection's coming up. Tongue
