Is it that they just get more publicity or do these cars crash at a greater rate than

all other Porsches ? Must be way too much power for the drivers to handle properly. And yet, the HP race continues with what now appears to be simply

little more than ego-driven competition between makers - 400+ hp is almost entry level, so much so that Audi, Peugeot, Subaru, etc. have some in store for next year, 500 and 600 hp may become common place for stock MBZs, and then of course, there are the super exotics like the Bugatti with nearly 1,000 HP propelling it to 250mph + ... for a street car ! But why would that be surprising when you can reach 195 mph , and go 0-60 under 4 seconds in cars that "only" cost around $ 200k ? Lots of people have $ 200k to spend on a car, but I wonder how many of them can deal with 600 or 700 horses under their foot without wrapping those beautiful machines around the first telephone pole outside of their driveway ?

I see lots more crashes in the cards.. The DMV should probably mandate a DE course for every vehicle over 400 ponies. Yeah, I know, no way to regulate modified engines and also a bit of a draconian statement, but you just wait until that 78 year old granny in Pasadena climbs into her new 900hp V16 Caddy

( scheduled for '07 release , right ? ) and takes out about 10 cars stopped at the intersection of Arroyo Parkway and Colorado blvd ? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Aw, shucks, you guessed right; I'm just venting because I'm envious the 968

can barely keep up with friggin' Pontiacs ( GTO ) nowadays <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Actually Dan I think the consumer is the one with the ego problem.

As enthusiasts we all appreciate a nice amount of power to make the car sporty to drive. But at some point where does the need for 400, 500, 600 HP really come into play in a street car? Are we all street racing to get to the entrance ramp first?

If you are alone on the street, does the car have enough power to make you smile? Mine does. Isn't that enough?

A few quotes with the coffee this morning: <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

In the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding on the back of the tiger ended up inside.

- John F. Kennedy

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power.

-Abraham Lincoln

Of all manifestations of power, restraint impresses men the most.

- Thucyclides

Being powerful is like being a lady. If you have to tell people you are, you aren't.

- Margaret Thatcher

The power to destroy a planet is insignificant when compared to the power of the Force.

good point dan - i've felt for years that you should have to qualify to be able to drive certain cars - own them, fine - no harm there - but to but drive them, now you're taking my life in your hands - you should be skilled enough to drive them - safely negotiating the DMV parking lot doesn't do it - cars are more dangerous than a handgun, if you stop to think about the numbers - we really should do more to limit who is licensed to drive, and what they are licensed to drive - there are a lot of people out there that can't handle their minvan or SUV (i've had 4 of them hit me already), let alone a high performance car

by the way, 25 years ago, i was one of those people that should not have been allowed to drive the car i had

i read a stat once a number of years ago that said that nationally 3 out of 5 new 911 owners are involed in an accident in the car in the first year of ownership

that's gotta stop and make you think
