My mechanic took a stethoscope to the under carriage of my car while doing a thorough inspection and informed me that the bearings in my central tube are making a lot of noise. I don't hear it inside the car, but he suggested we research a rebuilt tube. I did a search of rebuilt central tubes and the 928 community has a few DIY articles out there. Has anybody had issues with their 968 besides me?

I looked up the part numbers thinking I could find a used one and send one out for a core or play with it myself, but the tip has it's own part number (probably shared with the 944 auto), so it's not like these are a dime a dozen.

Its a PITA to rebuild. Luckily, someone has developed new bearings. He doesnt have a website. Constantine, Black Sea R&D 772-713-1289. Calling him will probably be the best thing that ever happened to your TT. Much better than OEM, and actually available.

When you had it done, what was it a catastrophic fail, wobble or was it just making noise?

Constantine called back. He seems like a genuine 928 enthusiast. He has come up with a clever bearing replacement that looks a lot better than the OEM bearings. Apparently he has TT's figured out for the 944, 968 and 928. He even replaces the bearing for free if you ship the Central Torque Tube to him. The shipping gets spendy, but he said the removal of the old bearings is tough and he spent a lot of money getting the proper tools.

I have rebuilt my TT on my S2. The bearing somewhat catastrophically exploded within the TT, making a terrible squeeling sound (135,000km on Odo). It was teh front bearing that failed, but upond disassembly the rear was fairly shot as well. Rebuild took a l o n g time. Once TT was removed (maybe 6 hrs - rear suspension needs to be dropped), it probably took me another 12 hours to rebuild it. It is very difficult pulling the old bearings out and even harder getting the new ones in and then threading the driveshaft through the installed bearings without dislodging them (I needed to put rivets around the TT circumference to keep the bearings in place).

Some time ago now, but how did you go ?

Constantine quoted $655 plus shipping.

I have not had it done yet. I'm waiting for it to become a little worse or have another reason to remove the tt before I pull the trigger. He suggested that it should get louder and louder before it fails.
