My 968 finally finds itself under the knife...
#1

Well, I finally bit the bullet and submitted my 968 to the capable hands of Pete @ RSBarn. On a somewhat warmer than normal day back in January, Pete arrived at my house with his tow vehicle and race trailer. I charged the battery the night before, and added some air to the tires. Pete got the car started without much issue. The fact that the car started at all somewhat suprised me. I half expected to end up pushing it into the trailer with Pete. Off to his shop we went...

Some of you may or may not remember, but I was experiencing tapping noise in my engine bay. Because of this, I have not driven the car for more than about 1000 miles since I obtained it a few years back. It got to the point where I knew I either had to get it fixed so I could drive the damn thing, or try and sell. Luckily, the wife was pushing me to get it fixed and common sense won out in the end!

Pete put the car up on his lift and immediately noticed two things:

1) A power steering hose was leaking and had distributed some PS fluid in and around my engine bay. Bummer, but nothing too bad, I think! I noticed a spot on the garage floor quite a few months ago, but thought it was oil from a dried gasket or seal. Not so.

2) My A-arm rear mounts are in terrible condition- rusted, disintegrated, etc.

Other than that, most everything looked okay. Not concours, nor perfect, but acceptable.

Then it was on to check the rod bearings. I came down during the day to help (read: get in Pete's way!). He took the oil pan off and we (he) inspected the rod bearings and the crank journals. Pete's initial diagnosis was that they looked acceptable. He plasti-gauged them and determined they were well within spec! Woohoo! No damage to the crank or the bearings! While there, he checked the motor mounts and found that one was out of spec. He ordered up some parts (new rod bearings, new motor mounts, new oil pan gasket, new control arm mounts from Racer's Edge [very nice pieces!], etc.) and has begun to reassemble to bottom end. While doing so, he removed the existing motor mounts and found one to be cracked in half! While somewhat apprehensive, this could be the source of my tapping noise. I sure hope so!

As a side note... Can I tell you how beautiful the Racer's edge spherical bearing pieces are? Very well made! After seeing them, I wanted more than just the rear A-arm mounts, but I didn't tell Pete that! I need to stay focused on having the problems fixed first!!!!

There are other details here and there, but that is the bulk of it so far. Pete is going to checking a bunch of other stuff for me (repair and replace as necessary) so as to get the car mechanically sound. As things progress more, I will update everyone. I am extremely excited about the whole thing!

And now a few words about Pete if I may...

He has been more than accommodating and he is a straight shooter. So far I have nothing but great things to say about him and his dealings with me. I believe that my 968 is in great hands and I look forward to driving it this season thanks to Pete and his work. I would certainly recommend him to anyone in his geoghapical area (or outside of it provided you want to ship in your car!!!).

After I get the car back, I plan to put many miles on it and really start hitting the cosmetic issues. The cosmetic list is long, culminating is a respray/paint job. But that is a few years down the road.

I am also considering some performance improvements, and I am anxiously awaiting the results of Pete's NA mods. I would first like to get the car sorted mechanically, then cosmetically, and after which, I can focus on some perf mods.

Saw your car when I dropped ours off a couple of weeks back. You have a nice looking car from what I could see with it up on the rack. The mounts get trashed by the PS leak all of the time. I have the same plan as you get it mechanically sound and then move on to the cosmetics.

Did you ride in Pete's silver coupe?

Thanks! I really like my color combo. A black interior, from an up-keep viewpoint, would be better, but the gray goes well with the Aventurine. I'll be ordering some vinyl from World Upholstery in the near future so I can get a few things recovered.

I saw yours sitting under cover- very nice as well! And I am sure your paint makes mine look like poo! I wish I had a cab to go along with the coupe, but the wife would most certainly disown me immediately....

I did get a quick ride in Pete's silver car... very nice! His interior is great and I love the cloth insert sport seats! Damn do they grip (either that or I'm a lard @ss!)...

I think Pete is taking good care of us and our babies!

Bio, I'm really glad that you're getting your car fixed, and that you chose a very good doctor to perform the operations. Pete, if you're reading this, I need to talk to you to agree on the scope of my next visit, which I'd like to do sometime in April.

Bio, we need to do beers in New Hope.

Jim- Yes we do! Life is a whirlwind right now... Wife is due with #2 any day now... In the process of securing a new job... Chomping at the bit to drive the 968 given the mild Winter here in PA... And the list goes on! That said- name a day and time and I will be there as long as the wife isn't at Abington Memorial! The first is absolutely on me... and I want to hear about your vacation!

Ether- The seats in Pete's silver car are standard Porsche 968 sport seats (circa '92-'93, 964 style, not hard-backed 993 style) with cloth inserts. The cloth is a very tight and dense weave, with a diagonal Porsche script pattern. They feel great and look really trick in Pete's car. I have been enamoured with different seats since I bought my 968. I really want a set of 968 CS seats, but they are pretty much non-existent in Classic Gray! I'd have to order them directly from the factory, and they may not be available to begin with. If they are available, the price per is nothing short of extravagent! The only other option is used CS seats, then I'd have to get them re-painted and recovered to match. Can't have seats that don't match the color schemes!

Long and short of it- Pete's silver 968 is a nice ride- both in looks and performance!

UPDATE:

Things that were shot/destroyed/useless on my car so far...

1) Motor mounts (one marginal, other not so good!)

2) Rear mounting bushings on the control arms were bad! Rust city.

3) Power steering leak- maybe hose, maybe just loose clamp.

4) DMF- shot!

5) Clutch- shot!

Some good news (which I think I already relayed)... The crank and bearings were in great shape for a car that has 75K miles on it. Perhaps the bearings were previously replaced, but nonetheless, I now have a reference point of when they were most recently done! Thanks Pete!

I am happy and sad at the same time. I am happy because these things are being fixed and I should have many miles of trouble free motoring to come. I am sad because of reasons like only having driven the car for 2500 miles. The PPI I had done not catching some of these things, etc. There are more reasons, but they are neither here nor there at this point. The car is mine and it will be fixed.

Anyway, the car is in capable, excellent hands. I feel there is still more to the story that will continue to unfold based upon what Pete has found so far. Some of these things may warrant additional, and possibly extensive work. But I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that all additional issues are minor.

Note to self: enjoy remaining Boddington's in fridge as if they were the last I will enjoy for some time to come.

Second note to self: rekindle taste for Carling Black Label

Third note to self: buy flowers for wife with money saved from buying Carling in lieu of Boddington's.
