Carfax
#1

This weeks issue of AutoWeek reported that Carfax only records accident that exceed $3000 in damages. I thought they recorded damages if any body part was replaced.

Larry,

I have always assumed that CarFax received it information from insurance company reports to the national database, and that any repairs done by body shops and paid privately did not get reported. In other words, I doubt that body shops have any obligation to report repairs to anyone. Is this correct?

I think I have experiences in the past where vehicle and homeowner's claims of less than $3000 were obtained when I attempted to change insurance carriers.

The insurance companies data basis are totally different. They report claims to an organazion called CLUE. Any claim reported to your company or agent whether payment is made or not goes into this data base. A body shop owner told me that the tracking was done when they order body parts, but I don't guess that is correct. When I bought a BMW that was a demo a few years ago, the Carfaxs listed a bumper scrap that was just painted and it was less than $200.

First Post for me, probably won't be my last as I'm about to get a 968 in the next few weeks if all goes well...from what I understand CARFAX will report accidents in certain states, if certain damage is over a certain dollar amount, etc, but it varies state to state, so it pays to see what the deal was. I know in GA and FL at least that if there is any police report it is reported and supposedly if the damage is over $500 they also will report.

I would imagine any serious, even remotely minor accident involving most p-cars will not only exceed $500 but will involve a police report. The one time I decided to be nice and not call the cops I paid for it for a year as the insurance company of the offender tried to act like their client wasn't at fault for rear-ending me at 35MPH when I was sitting at a red light....
