Carbon fiber parts needed?
#1

What carbon parts are missing out there for the 968? I have a set of cooling inlets for the front brakes made out of fiber glass and they could be used to make plugs for carbon fiber pieces instead. What else is on the wish list?

Well,since you're asking...

In addition to the hood, I remember a thread many years ago (I believe started by Flash), about the possibility of a carbon fiber torque tube. Is this possible/practical, or am I hallucinating?

lol - you weren't hallucinating - i did toss this around a couple of years ago - the problem i ran into was the rear connection, and the cost to do it - lots of weight to be lost though, and for a race car, very worth it - i just couldn't make it make sense on a street car

I have only seen those on the 997. Are they available for the 968 or did you mean that style?

It would be a nice piece. But (and it is a big but) making a carbon torque tube is not something that you do with the back of your hand since the possible dangers involved with one failing seems to great.

What about a pin hood design that not only acts as a regular hood but also acts as a "strut rod", ie reinforcing the whole front end?

An aluminum TT would be easier to make.... might save about 20lbs or slightly more...

firefish - it would have to be pretty thick and likely honeycombed to be stiff enough, but i'm sure it could be done - lol - might end up heavier than a brace though

xrad - yeah - one way or another that steel tube is getting replaced in the race car - same with the torsion tube - just no need for those heavy materials

AIR makes Carbon Fiber splitters & Turbo S rear wings for the 968 (i have both). I'd be interested in a Carbon Fiber hood.
