CAR STARTS IN SECOND?

JUST PURCHASED A 93 AMAZON GREEN 968 TRIPTRONIC. WHEN I PUT THE CAR IN GEAR THE DASH SHOWS THE CAR GOING STRAIGHT INTO SECOND IS THAT NORMAL ? IF I SHIFT IT MANUALY IT SEEMS TO SHOW ON THE DASH ITS IN FIRST.

A common thing for first-timers to notice on a tip. You need to floor it in full auto mode to make it launch in 1st, otherwise it will start in 2nd to "save fuel". The tip's an interesting beast. Five shift maps if I am remembering correctly...almost impossible to get to the most aggressive one, although it's more fun to drive in manual mode (IMHO).

It's not that hard to get it into the most aggressive shift map!!!



But it definately is more fun in manual mode. I wasn't too impressed by the tiptronic at first, but discovered just how good acceleration in gear is with it, and got used to working the manual side, and I really like it. Especially driving around Seattle. Not as hilly as San Fran, but no fun at all with a manual when traffic is heavy.

If you disconnect the battery for awhile, then drive aggressively once reconnected, it should be easier to get the TCM programmed to use a better shift mapping.

An interesting article in Pano a couple of issues back by an experienced CDN racer was that it took about two laps of driving around a track to get it to finally move into the most aggressive shifting mode. He said he doubted very many people who only street their tiptronic car ever see the most aggressive mode. Having said that, getting it to the next-to-most-aggressive shift map shouldn't be too tough. I suspect that's what most of us find ourself in when driving aggressively on the street, unless you drive it in manual mode.

I'd love to read more about the Tiptronic shift modes. Does this apply to all models using the Tip? Are there any technical articles on the subject? Has anyone every tried to reprogram?

Early tips had five maps. More recent ones have far more.



I'd love to read more about this topic as well. Have picked up bits and pieces from different places, but that Panorama article was one of the best I've read recently on the subject. It was in the December 2004 issue, and was titled "The Art of Driving: A Conversation with Rick Bye".



Here's the passage I was referring to earlier:



"In my track experience, I've had to drive a Tiptronic very hard for at least two laps before the computer shifts into its most aggressive map. This leaves me wondering how many Tiptronics out there ever reach more aggressive levels on the road. I would think very few and I wouldn't want to go for a ride in one"



another interesting one:



"Among other things, it takes into account time spent with the gas pedal to the floor; how quickly the driver gets off the gas, and the degree of cornering g-force. The early Tiptronic's computer had five different shift map levels, ranging from sedate highway cruising to aggressive track driving. The difference between level one and level five was significant. At level five, the Tiptronic shifts up at very high rpms and becomes very responsive to throttle-induced downshifting."



Was a great article. Anyone else have any tip tech info?
