Car bras
#1

I know I read about the use of a car bra in the forum somewhere. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to buy ? what type ?

there are 2 vinyl bras i know of - colgan makes one, and then there is the original one that the dealership sold - primary differences are:

original one has the porsche crest, a smoother grain in the vinyl, and is a bit more flexible than the colgan

i have the original one - a friend of mine has the colgan - they both work

i'm not a fan of the carbon fiber look - looks unfinished and dated to me - still cracks me up that it was a complete accident that the look ever caught on - it was a kid who worked at the place that originated the material who had a car he was making a part for and was too broke to spend the money for the paint - thankfully that fad is passing

if i ever find a flatbed scanner big enough, i will get the bra kit i have scanned and we can then have clear bra kits at a fraction of the cost of hand cut kits

I thought it might look bad especially on a black car. It's hard to tell much from the website pics. Pelican has a better price on the colgan than Automotion. I would like to see if I can find the original Porsche cover with the emblem.

i like the grain on the original one better than the colgan too, but that is subjective for sure

i have mixed emotions about the bra - i like what it does for protection - i don't like the look as much as without - i don't like the fact that the car runs hotter with it than without, even though i removed the mesh which made it run even hotter

Flash,

I got the stock Porsche Bra. Very happy with it. Nice look and good quality. One question. The diagram shows the small S hook under the hood attaching to something Where does it go ? The diagram is hard to read. I know the bra tucks under the nose portion ahead of the hood

lol - that is the question of the century - somebody told me what that was once, and i thought at the time "oh - wow", but now i've forgotten again

Attaches to a pair of scissors best I can tell. I have teh Colgan. Ran it with the mesh intact on a summer fun run. Bad idea - car ran very hot. I cut out some holes and that seemed to do the trick. Unfortunately I have this nasty hunk of gorilla tape from my, ehem, repair job that I need to take care of )

Seems to rub on the leading edge of the bumper cover a bit and left some small scrathes that I had to buff out. I think flash tapes that piece. All in all a fair trade for a long run when rock chips are unavoidable. I don't use it for around town trips. You also need to take it off after a run as it collects a bit of road dust at the margins.

yeah - i removed the mesh, but this led to a series of other modifications of the bra to keep it still

not perfect, but as stated, better than rock chips

My car came with the colgan one, perhaps the "carbon" look that flash commented on, but I didn't like the look of it either, so I left it off the first year I had the car, and that was after getting the front bumper, part of the fenders and hood repainted, so you can imagine after a year unprotected driving right after a repaint--it looked like a starry sky if you got up real close--so I did my best to touch up and polish out the more visible chips, and then I put the colgan bra back on for six months so that I didn't get any more chips, and I must say, I got tired of that pretty quickly. I would take it off to carefully brush it out when I washed the car, then put it back on. My mechanic showed me how to hook up the little hook under the hood. It goes under the plastic fairing with the glove box ('92) and hooks in a hole in the sheet metal underneath. Worked great once I got it hooked up right. Anyway, after six months of that I did what I should have done to start with: got a clear bra put on. The only good thing about waiting a year to do it was that I saw that the fenders and hood don't get nearly as many strikes as the bumper, so I got the clear bra put on only the bumper. I figured I can touch up and polish out the few strikes on the fenders and hood. Doing only the bumper also eliminates the film lines on the fenders or hood--one factor that had made me put off doing it. The cost was $500 rather than $750 for one that includes the front of the fenders and hood. It has worked out well--no more hassling with the bra when I wash the car, and the front end looks better!

dep,

I had my clear bra put on after a front end re-spray.
Do not regret it one bit.
The finish is smooth and most lookers do not see the end line. Only other car guys notice the line.
My first 911, in 1969 has the OEM bra, because that is all that I new back then, now I would never go back to the on-off crap.
The material is getting better and better and I, for one will only use the applied clear product on this and any other car that I have.

If anybody's interested, I have an original Porsche bra with the installation instructions. I'd be happy to scan and post the instructions if it might be helpful.
