Can you bypass dash CEL to read fault codes?

For some reason my Check Engine dash light does not work, making it impossible for me to read the fault codes. Rather than remove the dash to replace bulbs, in the short term, couldn't I just identify the right wire from the DME controller and tap into it with a light or volt meter and read the pulsed code? If light, what amperage are the dash lights? Has anyone done this?

I would thnk that could work. Look at the attached pin out diagram. It looks like pin 21 is the one.

I wonder if a previous owner removed the bulbs to mask some problem.
