Cab Conv Top Latch
#1

I'm having problems with my right side convertable top latch properly engaging on my '94 Cab. I previously had the same problem but after adjusting the framework by using the service manual supplement as a guide I finally got it to match up to the windshield and work OK. I bought this 968 Cab about a year ago, and it never would latch correctly right up front (I suspect that the convertible top frame work was tweaked a bit by a previous owner that may have tried to open it with the left latch still closed thus bending the framework slightly?). Now after using the vehicle for about 6 months since the adjustment the right latch won't engage very well again, and also the top is now leaking badly where the windshield gasket touches the right upper window seal on the soft top frame. I looked closely at it all again, and I've noticed that the right side latch roller is twice as wide as the left side latch roller, this seems to make it difficult to line up correctly for proper engagement into the tract on the upper windshield frame since the track width is virtually the same as the roller width (about 1/8"). Can any of the rest of you tell me if their Cab has a right side latch roller that is also twice the width as the left side one(1/8" vs about 3/32"), or is your right side one the same width as the left one? (I'm thinking that maybe this thing has been changed out with one that isn't the correct type from some other model Porsche Cab vehicle?). A new one is $146 from Sunset, so I don't want to buy it without being sure the proper part has a latch roller the same width as the left side one which always latches in great.

Are any of the rest of you Cab owners having problems like I'm having with your soft tops? Also, how the hell do you keep the water from leaking on these damn things? (I priced all new rubber seals and was HORRIFIED to find out that they are over $5000 from Sunset Porsche! WTF...Porsche must be out of their minds to price the lousey rubber seals at that much of a cost!!!).

This may not be any consolation, but I have had trouble latching my top since I owned the car. It helps to really pull down on the top using the grab hole above the rear view mirror. PUll it down rapidly and with force and this will allow you to put a little bit more crush on the rubber seal.

My top does seal well except at the top of the door windows.

Though I have not researched it myself, there has been discussion on this forum about using some rope seals available from JC Whitney.

My cab top latches are the same size. Yes, the rubber is out of reason to replace!!!!!

I found that I could get a seal at the side windows by adjusting the metal side window molding in towards the body. There are adjustments at the base of the piece at the very bottom of the door interior. A pain to get to, easy to adjust but worth it.

Also check that the doors fit level with the body when closed. My passenger door was out about 3/8". When I adjusted the striker pin on the body inward the door sealed much better. There does seem to be a spot on the very top of the forward edge of the side windows that just leaks...not too much, but it does leak. I have had luck at the bone yards that have our cars in getting good rubber pieces to replace the ones that are beyond repair. Some cabs have great rubber due to lower mileage and being inside all of these years.

I am having a problem with a "stiff" cab latch on my passenger side. I put the top down and turned it and it is really difficult to turn. Driver side turns quite easily. Is there a lubricant that should be applied to the latch mechanism? I have done a search and have not come up with an answer. Thanks

Make sure your doors are open or windows rolled down before you try to close. Found that a big issue on mine. As mentioned pull down the top hard from the center when closing. Try to lubricate the rubber with silicone o-ring lube to see if that keeps the water out. Has the top ever been washed and sealed?

Kaj, it's not the top or seal, its the latch that you put the handle in to lock or unlock the top. I tried it with the top down so there should have been no resistance. The driver side works smoothly, but the passenger side feels like it needs to be lubricated. That was what I was talking about.

So I took the cover off and sprayed some Gibbs on the shaft. Worked it back and forth re-sprayed, worked it again. It has improved about 50%, but still isn't anywhere as easy as the driver side. It certainly isn't bothersome enough to replace it though. Any other suggestions or lubricants I should use?

Take a look at the following thread, particularly post #13 second picture.

http://www.968forums.com/topic/8266-cab-top-wont-lock/

I used this info as a guide to fix my top. The passenger side latch wasn't engaging. I used a long landscape spike as a punch (placed the head of the spike against the sheet metal and tapped the pointy end with a rubber mallet) to take a slight bend out of the metal. My explanation is on the second page of that thread.

Hope this helps.

Dottney, thanks for reminding me that I failed to complete my post. I re-sprayed with Gibbs, scrubbed the mechanism and worked it back and forth, and the latch works like butter! So if anybody has that problem... problem solved!

I've had my 1992 Cab for a couple months now and I've been busy doing maintenance and fixing lots of tiny cosmetic things.

I'm now in the "stop the rattles" phase and started looking at rattle from the driver's side top latch.

It is interesting because

(1) the top seems to latch fine and doesn't come loose

(2) there is no water or air leakage through the rail area

(3) There is no rattle from the passenger side

(4) closer inspection shows that rollers on the two sides don't move the same. The passenger side can be moved 180 degrees easily when open. The driver side can only move 45 degrees or so when open. Can someone let me know which is the correct movement range?

Here is a link to show how each side moves:
