You can get a nice Battery Tender brand for half the Porsche price and it will probably be a better maintainer.

The nice thing about the "real" Porsche unit is that it has the cigarette lighter adapter and will indeed plug right into the 968. It will work with all newer model cars but will not work with older cars (lighter socket is different) and it does not have provisions for connecting directly to the battery. I use one and I like the ease of just plugging it in. I got mine as a present and have since picked up a second one (brand new in the box) dirt cheap from Craigslist.
The Battery Tender brand comes with a couple of different connectors - spade lugs and alligator clips - and I think they sell other leads/adapters. The transformer has a mating disconnect point that can be used with any of their adapters. I used the spade lugs and permanently attached a Battery Tender Jr. to my 911SC and it's also fairly easy to use since I leave the pigtail and disconnect in the front cargo area tucked under the carpet. They can be had for 25 bucks or so.
Either way you choose to go, just make sure you get a true maintainer/float charger and not just a simple trickle charger. Basically, it needs feedback from the battery to know when to turn on and off...otherwise, it's charging all the time which can be bad.

Ditto Darryl's comments. The Porsche unit works great and is very convenient.
