4-second Buzz At Start After Dis/Reconnecting Battery...

Hi all,



I disconnected the battery yesterday to pull the instrument cluster. Since putting it all back together, I hear a 4-second buzz/whirr from down behind the stereo head when the ignition is switched on and again just after the engine fires. It didn't do it before I worked on the dash. It sort of sounds like a small motor running, but I don't know if there's a motor down there or why it would be doing this twice in quick succession. I had a look at the wiring diagram, but I couldn't see anything helpful on it. As far as I can tell, the noise only happens at switch-on/startup.



Can anyone shed any light on what it might be? The only cables I disturbed to pull the instruments were the three connectors on the instrument binnacle itself and the battery negative lead. When I reconnected the battery, it also armed a second alarm the car apparently has (fortunately the Meta-branded fob disarmed both when they went off together after opening the door!), but it doesn't seem like an alarm would involve something that would make a 'motory' noise.

does the stereo head have a hard drive in it for nav and/or mp3 files?

Is it a rapid-fire clicking of the climate-control solenoids? Those are located on the passenger side of the center console, and some people's have made a rapid enough clicking to be a "buzz".

The stereo head is a fairly basic Alpine unit with a radio and CD drive and not much else. The noise is a smooth buzz/whirr, rather than the clicky rumble of a hard drive. The car is a Sport so doesn't have A/C or climate control. I don't think it sounds like a relay - does the standard heater/blower setup have any relays down there? Weirdly enough, it seems to have stopped doing it today. I hate problems that 'fix' themselves...

There might still be a vacuum solenoid for the indoor/outdoor flap.

There are 2 motors right above the drivers right knee for the climate control so maybe you bumped something and it's just rubbing on an actuator.

Thanks all, I'll have a proper butcher's when I pull it all apart again to fit the odometer gears <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Most CD head units spin up for a second when power is applied. Health check and/or a test to see if a CD is installed and to read the CD metadata.
