Barely passed smog
#1

Well, I finally got around to smogging the ol 968 today. Went to one smog shop and was told that I must go to a Test Only shop due to the age of the car. So I drove around and found one for only $50.00 out the door.

Results: Machine stayed awhile on the first test which is normally not a good thing as it is checking ,double checking, and triple checking. This was the 15mpg test. 25mph test went by quickly.

15mph

HC MAX-114, AVE-31, MEASURED-114(OUCH-dead even with max, no wonder it stayed here awhile)

CO MAX-.73, AVE-.10,MEASURED-.33

NO MAX-785, AVE-237,MEASURED-646 (WOW)

25mph

HC MAX-88, AVE-20, MEASURED-66

CO MAX-.61, AVE-.09,MEASURED-.38

NO MAX-724, AVE-199,MEASURED-626 (WOW)

Odd thing is that the car runs very strong. Had the Racer-X chip in it. No hiccups, no hesitation. Pulls in all gears. New upper end. No detectable exhaust leaks. Air box mod. New fuel filter. New plugs, cap, rotor. Does have old O2 sensor in it. Idle is fine.

My previous Porsches all smogged much cleaner and I know these cars generally run clean. Though it passed I know it can get better so I will replace the O2 sensor shortly.

Thought I would share.

Hopefully with some inexpensive maintenance you can get the #'s down. . . I recently had my 92 smogged and it passed with < 10% in almost all categories. Totally stock.

that is really high - sounds like you have a control or sensor out of whack somewhere

Just for grins, you may want to check if there are any stored codes. And, if the O2 sensor has a lot of miles on it, it may need to be changed before the next test. I like to run some F/I cleaner before testing... Also, if I have a car that's marginal, I'll run it hard enroute to the tester to get the temp up, [although these cars cool quickly].

Lee,

Those are just like the results I had last summer on my 95 Cab, except two of mine were right at the limit. At some time, between having the head gasket replaced and the smog check, the front Hall sensor was disconnected and the plug was pushed under the power steering reservoir. I thought I saw the tech fiddling with a connection up by the distributor. I fixed the broken plug with J-B Weld and it seems to be staying connected, but I want to replace the whole sensor/connector assembly, but that's another thread. Given the almost identical readings at a Test Only Center in San Diego County, I would look at the connector first. By the way when disconnected it didn't set a bad sensor code. Now if your test was a TOC next to DMV in Chula Vista, I would be real suspicious.

Below I've copied Lee's Smog results with those of my 95 Cab last year when the Hall Sensor was disconnected. My O2 sensor is relatively new with less than 3K miles on it. Plugs, wires had less than 500 miles on them, new cap and rotor. Fortunately for Lee his test standards were not as tough as I had to pass, he wouldn't have made it. Still comparison shows how much the Hall Sensor alone effects the results when disconnected. Combine that with another problem, like a bad sensor, old plugs, wires, caps, etc. you don't pass in California. -sp4149
