Audiophile input
#1

I have been following apex's stereo install and have made a few inquiries, but think I need to start a different thread for my questions. I plan on eventually upgrading front and rear speakers (JL's in the doors and can get that info from apex's thread) in my cab. Righty now I have stock door speakers and have the ability to adjust the crossover on my amp (Alpine MRV-F450). I can also adjust the crossover to the 4x6 Kickers that I swapped out for the stock Blauplunks. I realize they are not the best, but they sound pretty decent for now. My questions are: #1 what frequency would the stock speakers and the 4x6's, be able to reproduce so I can adjust the crossover accordingly? #2 what are the best 4x6 speakers to buy, when I replace them? I know Flash had said the Pioneers were pretty good, but I have seen the Infinity, MB Quart and Memphis 10 mentioned as well. Opinions? and thanks!

the pioneers specced well, and sound decent. keep in mind that no 4x6 is going to be great, and with it behind that panel, it's really limited. i would set that crossover to cut anything below 75hz using at least a 12db/octave butterworth

frankly nothing is going to help much in the rear of a cab, unless you want to cut holes in that panel so the sound can get out. i am going to play with that and see if i can surface mount a 6.5

the fronts are also still an issue. while rated at 48hz, even the JL has trouble producing low end in that location. i would cut those off at about 60, again with at least a 12db/octave butterworth

one thing i would try to avoid is bright crisp tweeters. with the top down, all you get is hissy noise.

the bottom line is that you are in a cab. that will make things tough from the get go. the sound varies so widely from sitting still to driving top up to driving top down. i've spent over $5k and i'm still not there yet. at some point i am just going to have to draw a line and learn to live with it.

Thanks Flash. I have those 8 inch free air subs in the cubby (causing that damn knob to rattle on the one side... and yes I did adjust it to no avail) so I do get some decent low end "kick". I'll try what you said and see how good I can get it for the time being. Btw, top up, RARELY happens! Thats what they made a 928 for! LOL
