Attacked By An Evil Camry!
#1

I got rear-ended on the freeway yesterday. Thankfully, I would estimate it at only around 10 mph or so. My passenger and I were surprised, but not hurt and, fortunately, my neck doesn't feel stiff this morning. I have to say I am quite impressed with how solidly my 968 is built. One of the black square rear bumper guards took the brunt of it and just has some visible scrapes. There are also a couple of black marks on the bumper but, other than that, everything appears to be undamaged. I suspect if I had been in my old Miata, there would have been at least $1500-$2000 worth of damage. I'm planning to bring the car into my mechanic for an inspection, just to be on the safe side. Anything I should be especially concerned about? All advice welcome.

Take note of any mild back or shoulder pain today. i was rear ended many years ago by a car that was pushed into me by a dump truck traveling about 35mph. surprisingly, I leaped out of the car and ran to help the lady behind me who was in bad shape. I went in to work later that day. Around lunchtime is when the pain started to settle in. I guess my muscles were tense. The next morning it hit me like a ton of bricks. After 2 months of therapy my back. still isn't quite right.

Glad everyone is fine. Recently my son was involved in a rear end hit and run in the 968. So my insurance tried to settle for $600 by saying the rear bumpers 10" rip can be repaired instead of replaced. No body shop will touch it for that estimate. Needless to say we still have not settled yet.

These bumpers can not be repaired. I had the insurance company replace mine because there was a crack only noticeable from the inside of the bumper. There was no hassle at all either, the body shop said the bumper was cracked, and the insurance adjuster just verified that it was indeed cracked. All in all, insurance paid out about $4000 for this (2600 for new bumper from germany):

You need to have a good look at the bumper structure along with anything else mounted back there.

A friend of mine hit a kangaroo over here with a Honda CRV on the front corner. When he got out you could not see anything at all (apart from some fur and other animal collision bits). He took it to a repair shop just to be sure and once they got under it, there was around 600mm fron the bumper to an oil cooler (I think from memory) and the oil cooler was bent and some small damage to the structure. The plastic bits took the hit and bounced back - but there was still enough energy to do some minor structural damage to the car. This wasn't a 1.5tonne Camry.

My recommendation, get the car on a hoist and look behind the bumper to see if there is any damage - even at 15km/h (10 mph) - there is a lot of energy.

the bumper COVER can be repaired - not long after i got my blue car i got rear-ended - it ripped the cover - they repaired it - it held up just fine

i've also had the front one modified with parts removed and new ones installed - it can be done

that being said, it does take somebody who knows how to work with polyurethane - you can't just bondo it up - there are companies out there who specialize in just this kind of thing - many body shops won't do it though because they don't want to deal with having to do it over if something goes wrong - they can't afford it on their margins
