Further to my bit about lower arms in this same section, i would like to add the following. Lower arms can be modified but it requires machining. The balljoint kits for 944's all mention "hardened balls". They must mean case hardened, ie only surfaced hardened not thru hardened as that would make the pins liable to fracture. Yet I found out by trying to file the top of the ballpin with a file that material was readily removed. Its the engineering trick, if the file skites of then its brick hard circa 65Rockwell "C". If it files with some effort then 45/55 RC, if its softer yet then maybe 35/40 RC max. There not hard at all, not on OEM parts anyway. You need the toughness of steel to take the bending forces applied to the pin in service without fracturing.

I don't know about steel, but I've always been told mine must be made of solid "Brass."

After breaking 2 of them my dad a aeronautical mechanical engnieer (designed the MMu back pack arms for Nasa) took the broken one in and found

that the stock one is cast Iron. We had a couple made out of Stainless steel His quote wa that they would be 5 times the strenght of the stock ones.

never broke one since.



High neg camber numbers put them in a bind at the limit of travel. a bigger sway bar also helps stop the bind.

Ouch, cast iron has virtually no give at all, will shear at the drop of a hat.
