Any know details on this 968
#1

Been looking for this photo for about a year. I knew I had it. Just didn't know where. This is from Memorial Day Weekend at Lime Rock Park in 1996. Cool tube frame 968. Anyone have more photos or details about it?

for starters, that is a 944...or maybe even a 924.

What makes you say it's a 944?

Look at the window lines (rear 1/4 glass) of that race car, and then take a look at these photos of both my previous cars. And a couple others added. That is most def. 924/44 Rear glass. 968's are almost straight, while 924's and 944's angle up.

Wow. The photo is 2 years older than I thought. Same year as my 968 <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rock.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hmmm... I see your point about the rear quarter glass. But the tail lights look more like 968 than 944, and the thin horizonal air inlet in the front bumper is pure 968, as are the headlights. Maybe it's some sort of hybrid... a franken-Porshe?

Its a race car, the bumpers and lights can easily be swapped. Quite few 944 Turbo owners actually have a 968 rear bumper and tails installed on their cars. I've seen a couple 944 S2 Cabs with 968 rear ends as well. The rear 1/4 glass would require extensive body work in that area however. Not so much plug and play like the bumpers and lights.

I'm gonna say it's more 968 than 944. Here's why. That's a tube frame car. There's more custom fabrication on that car than real Porsche parts. I don't know what IMSA GT rules were back in 1994 but if they were like other similar series since then the silhouette and wheelbase had to be true to the stock model it was based on. I'd guess the only stock part on that exterior is the metal roof. The rest of that model is custom made metal or fiberglass. There are no bumper covers as we know them and there are no lights on an IMSA car. Those are just stickers or painted on. The car could have started life as a 944 based tube frame race car (leaving behind the rear 1/4 glass outline) but it was definitely updated to represent a 968 in these photos.

The 96 Rock "968" was rebodied 944 GTR Trans Am built by Fabcar. It was run with a 2.6L motor so it could legally weigh 1850 or less driver.

I was pitted next to it in 2005 at Summit Point. I had to leave early and then it had a big crash.

Car is now for sale as a very expensive bolt together project.
