Another close call..

Do you run a radar detector? I would have thought you'd get a signal if he was working traffic.

Funny enough, I had my 944S up to its maximum speed on - an abandoned airstrip - of which there were several in the Bangor, ME area. The air force base there closed after the cold war, and left a set of runways all over the countryside, some long enough to serve as backups for the space shuttle.

I usually have the radar detector on every time I take the car out for a fun weekend run, but this was just a three or so mile trip, the first half of which "to" was not freeway so no need for the detector since I don't speed on the street, but then when I decided to take the highway ( errr, I mean old airport runway ) back " from" , I was too lazy to mount that thing on. Besides, I had every intention to drive at or near the legal limit ..until I saw four wide open lanes in front of me with the nearest car in sight probably over 1/4 mile way ...what's a easy-to-give-into-temptation 968 owner to do in that situation when the road just begs you... ;-)

I mean come on! When the road begs you what is any self respecting 968 owner to do. I think we all feel your pain. The pain of a close call of course!!

I just realized how silly " I was too lazy to mount that thing on " must have sounded, given that all it takes is removing it from the glove compartment and sticking it on the windshield on its two suction cups ( it's a Passport cordless model ), and that task would have taken maybe 10 seconds. Now that's LAZY !

I do know that radar detectors on suction cups stuck to the windshield are not legal in this State ( yet it's perfectly ok to have some big-ass GPS unit on suction cups there - no law against that ) but then going over the speed limit is not legal either so the way I view it two wrongs make it right , thus radar stays on there ... most of the time :-)

Someone just said in another thread that most accidents happen within three miles of home - time to move!

Dan:

In California, it doesn't matter if it's a radar detector or GPS. Th relevant question is where is it mounted? Putting either one in the middle of the windshield is illegal. Putting either one in the lower corners of the windshield is legal. That said, I keep my Escort Solo suction mount always stuck to the windshield in the lower part of the center of the window and just slide the unit on and off as needed. Though technically illegal, I've never had a problem.

Good to know Bill and that seems to follow perfect logic, but I was under the impression there was a deliberate inequity in the rules relative to the positioning of a radar detector vs any other device.

.

I place mine right next to, and aligned with the rearview mirror so it's almost an extension of the mirror.. it never attracted any attention there, but then again I have not been stopped since 1987 either - I know, those of you who witnessed the speeds at which I usually drive are probably thinking , seriously, WTF ?! - so no test yet on whether or not that placement vs a lower windshield one makes any difference

"I have not been stopped since 1987 either"

The last time I got stopped was June 1967 and it was for "Exhibition of Speed" I went to pick up my younger brother on the last day of school and took down one of his friends in a drag race, a 1966 Chevy Impala SS396 vs. my 409 Bel Aire right in front of the High School, no contest and I didn't see the PD crusier parked up a side street.

But lately, I've been think about getting a radar detector, too many cops out looking to collect a "road tax".

The escort has helped me spot - er - high incident areas countless times. I never leave without it. Got it hard wired and it goes in both cars unless I am going to the Home Depot and back.

Gotta get me a detector...

First year of ownership I was able to talk my way out of a ticket THREE times!

Last year, not so lucky...

I should not complain too much, because of the new "excessive speed law" introduced here in BC last year (which is 40Km over the posted speed limit), since I was clocked at 39Km (!) over the limit. That got me a "fat" fine but I did not have my car impounded for 7 days!!! Which is accompanied by a tow bill, storage bill and higher license fees the following year(s).

I'll have to do some more research on which detector to get...

I have had detectors for years and they have all paid for themselves. Have also gotten tickets with detectors. Chronic abusers just look to minimize not eliminate. Although elimination is a worthy goal. Not one I have reached. Years ago having multiple licenses worked like a charm. Sorta can't get away with that anymore and not in that thought mode either. Growing up, well you all understand!!! Lol

This topic brings a story to mind...

I'll never forget the story one of my late uncles told us about trying to get away from being issued a ticket for speeding.

He had immigrated from Holland in the 50's as a young adult, so his Dutch was very good. He had been pulled over before for speeding, and had managed to get away with not being ticketed, because he simply spoke only Dutch to the officer and shrugged his shoulders a lot...

On another occasion he tried the same trick, but... much to his dismay, the officer was also a Dutch immigrant! The officer reprimanded him in Dutch and proceeded to write out the ticket!

Ther are only 2 real contenders, Valentine and Escort. I have an Escort 8500 and it must have gone off 50 times on the way to Flashs' house so all paid for on that trip. What's with WA anyway? Cripes, more Smokeys than Microsoft employees

it is illegal to mount a radar detector to your windshield in california. there is the "view obstruction" law, which many officers are using now.

also, in another thread, i posted the CVC section that specifically prohibits the affixing of anything whatsoever to your windshield (CVC section 27608A)

it also states clearly that only a GPS with a maximum screen size of 5" is legal in california to be mounted on the windshield (see exception 12). they are pretty darned careful not to list the radar detector in the exceptions list. unless the law just changed, it's still that way.

re: detectors.

valentine is a bit more sensitive, but falses too much around here as well as many other places. that gets pretty annoying.

escort case is known to fall apart.

bel has the same electronics as the escort, but a better case.

I thought that was the case...and even though a lot of traffic laws change every year, they are typically more restrictive in nature, I have yet to hear of one that rellaxes the rules in favor of the driver.. So you can mount a highly distracting 7" screen screen GPS on , but heaven forbid you should mount a radar detector at a fraction of that GPS' (view interference ) dimension. Yah, tell me that's not a deliberately biased law.

i thought it was 7 when i talked to you yesterday. from what i can find it's only 5.

also, it has to be mounted in either a 7" square in the lower right corner or a 5" square in the lower left corner. it cannot be in the center anywhere.
