Carrera GT vs Ferrari F40
#1

So I made a quick trip to the ATM this morning, in the 968, and while there a red Carrera GT passes by heading toward the nearby highway onramps. As I was returning home moments later I notice the red Ferrari F 40 which I see once or twice a month ( it " resides " somewhere up my street ) also heading toward the same highway and thought ; ha, they missed one another by five minutes, but who knows if they were even bound in the same direction once on the freeway..pity, I said to myself. However, since

it's a beautiful sunny day I decided to do a few miles run before I went back home. Sunday mornings are crawling with CHPs and not surprisingly, I did go by a patrol car poised and ready on the shoulder of the freeway but since I was moving along pretty close to the speed limit I just smiled and continued on. No more than half minute later a Firebird is in the fast lane ( there are four lanes in each direction on this highway ) probably going 80 or so. Sure enough, I see the CHP coming up in my rear view mirror flying in the fast lane and pulling the guy over at the next exit off the highway, about 1/4 of a mile in front of

me. And now the fun part and purpose of this post: just as I passed them, I see two red car silhouettes

approaching in the opposing direction and given how quickly they went by where I was it was very clear

a full race was going on. Yup, here were the GT and the F40 in what looked to be neck in neck and no

idea how fast they might have been going but I have to tell you that the sound was nothing short of pure

symphony to my ears, and must have filled an entire mile + radius with ithat ... Hell, I was waiting for

the sonic boom to shatter my windows ;-) . It was simply magnificent , sight and sound. And I

thought of the poor CHP officer who was likely already out of the car handing a ticket, and in the

opposite direction too, hearing what must have sounded like a mini- Formula 1 race going by and

thinking, WTF, this is just not my day !! LOL, there is some justice after all.

Adding to this post now much later in the day..I went for my usual walk in the afternoon around the neighborhood, and here's the F 40 again, rolling down the street.b I'm thinking this is round two after a long break, because I can't imagine you can keep that car going all day without it breaking down on you, LOL. It,ll probably be in the shop for the next two weeks before he takes it out again ;-) :-)

Some days are just meant to be and will stay with us forever. Looks like this was one of those days that you will tell your Grandkids about.

Great story Dan. Those cars do sound amazing at WOT. Woulda been nice to run behind and see the outcome.

Yeah, very disappointing being on the other side of the freeway, I would have loved to follow those two and just enjoy that tune for a bit longer.

Errr, did I write " follow" ? No, what I meant to say is too bad I was not on the same side so I could pass them and see their faces when this fierce 968 leaves them behind , and the BB catback roar drowns their ratty-ass , girlie-man exhaust notes.

LOL, I definitely would have taken after them, though as luck would have it a CHP might have been there also and ticket ME , in a scene reminiscent of the wildlife videos where the weak, limping young gazelle not able to keep up with the adult herd falls prey to the lion or cheetah.

Back to the cars; strangely enough I don't like the looks of either the Carrera GT or the F40, and furthermore I'm not a big fan of high pitch exhaust notes ( I,m more fond of the deep tune produced by Aston Martin, or Mustang even ) but seeing them outside of a track, side by side and with the db sound level those two generated , was awe-inspiring to say the least.

i don't get what people see in the F40 either but i still like the F50. i love the CGT inside and out. A V10 MR from Porsche.. Such a nice break from the 911 design and the flat 6 engine.

And I've always said the Mustang V8 is one of the best sounding cars I've ever heard.

" love the CGT inside and out "

not me, I sat in one ( and I'm about average at at 5'11" , 185 lbs ) I thought it was awful, ergonomics-wise. and on the outside, to me it just looks like just one step above a Boxster..

ds968 - "I don't like the looks of either the Carrera GT or the F40"

I think the Carrera GT is an amazing looking car. Not practical, but beautiful...

Last week I was in downtown Vancouver and I was following a Maserati and the sound that was echoing off the tall buildings from that exhaust was intoxicating!

I'm with Dan on the CGT - looks like an overgrown MR2 Spyder to me.

Yup, that's the other one I wanted to mention.. while the Ferrari screams, the deeper Maserati roar is far more appealing to my taste.. but sound preference, as are looks, is an equally subjective matter ..

Same thing Jake. I was in town at the same time as the autoshow 2 years ago and a Maser left the show and came down the street. He tromped it for a second between the buildings and I think I wet my self, just a little

until just now this didn't even cross my mind, but there is a guy who drives his Bugatti Veyron on hwy 280 in that particualr segment from time to time ( I presume he lives somewhere one exit away from my exit, I've seen him use that one several times entering the freeway ) so I wonder, had he been there and seen the F40 and GT at full speed, if he would have reacted as any other red-blooded driver of a 1,000 HP car might have.. that would have made for an evn greater scene ! ( and there was plenty of room, there was hardly any other traffic on the freeway that morning..) But, I have driven by his side on a couple of occasions and the guy ALWAYS keeps it under 70mph . What's the point buying something like that, just to show off that you have $ 2 mil to spare ?! Hell, I even tried to bait him just to see how the car would catapult away if he stepped on it, but to no avail.

You exhaust note-aholics will be please to hear that the new Toyota hybrid prototype that will run at Le Mans against the Audi TDI's brings with it the high pitched wail of a spun-up racing engine unlike that diesel rumble that we have all grown accustomed to listening two. Speed posted a short video clip a week or two ago, of this car running a speed on a European track.

Can claim to have any CGTs, F-40s, or Veyrons in my neighborhood, but there is and old Ferrari that every once in a will gets driven around the neighborhood. It looks to be a 195S Barchetta. Nice sound from the tiny little 2.5 L v-12.

i rode in a Prius last week and what a bummer, NO SOUND. I know it's a hybrid and it was running on the electric but cheez the loss of sound would drive me bonzo. You think they could come up with some exhaust sounds to put on the CD or something. It was so nice to get back in the 968 and hear the BB exhaust note.

Cosimo,

Kind of off topic, but I have heard that because hybrids are so quiet people will step out in front of them; for that reason future hybrids will have programmable sounds, Imagine "selecting" Ferrari V-12 (for your 2020 Prius)....

Maybe they need to do the old bicycle trick of putting a card in the wheel spokes.

I'll take the Jetson's sound. But realistically, on the average street or parking lot, you cant hear a cars engine till its close anyway. I think looking will solve this problem a lot better then sound effects. But why would we expect people to act responsibly
